The Moose are coming off a disappointing homestand that concluded with a sweep at the hands of the Wild who reside at the bottom of the Central. They went on the road for three which began in Grand Rapids against the league-leading Griffins. No easy task and when you see all the lineup absences you realize it was going to be even tougher.
Lineup news:
David Gustafsson is dealing with an injury as per play-by-play voice Daniel Fink. Tyrel Bauer serving one game of his two-game suspension. Colby Barlow still day-to-day. Four players up with Jets including 3/6 D core. Also fresh off signing a PTO, left-shot defenceman Dylan Moulton has joined the mix after spending the season in the ECHL and the Nolensville, TN product made his AHL debut this evening.
Moose lineup:
Shaw – Ford- Di Giuseppe
JAD – Zhilkin – Fagemo
Empey – Yager – Chibrikov
Lambert – Julien – Wagner
Sautner – Phillips
Anhorn – Barteaux
Zloty – Moulton
Milic
Notable:
Felt like if the Moose were going to win they’d need Jets goalie prospect Thomas Milic to stand on his head. While that wasn’t the case (although he’d have to be good) he did start the game with an excellent save to keep the game tied 0-0.
Nice give-and-go between Samuel Fagemo and Jaret Anderson-Dolan to open the scoring and give Manitoba a 1-0 lead.
Nice sequence by Jets prospect Jacob Julien who gets a chance (probably should have shot) and then sets up a great chance for Ashton Sautner who catches iron.
Two goals in three games for Isaak Phillips as this nice individual effort gave the Moose a 2-1 lead in the middle frame.
With the game tied 2-2, Sautner got boarded resulting in a five minute power play to conclude the 2nd period. But the powerless PP cannot get the visitors a go-ahead goal against the top ranked PK in the AHL.
While the Moose did have some chances including Jets prospect Brayden Yager hitting iron, they also gave up a pair of glorious shorthanded chances which Milic stopped.
It was an impressive game from the Moose to get the game to extra time as they were so shorthanded and have played the top-ranked Griffins to a 2-2 tie heading into OT. In fact Manitoba was outshooting Grand Rapids 37-26 through 60 minutes.
The incredibly shorthanded Moose would go on to knock off the league-leading Griffins with a shorthanded OT game-winner by Phil Di Giuseppe. That’s their league-leading 9th shorty.
With the victory the Moose improve to 24-18-4-1 and leapfrog ahead of the idle Stars into 3rd spot in the Central (with three games in hand).
