Selanne return somewhat dependent on Sundin?

From Curtis Zupke of the Orange County Register:

If you’ve been waiting patiently for Teemu Selanne to make a decision about playing this season, you are aware that his situation is tied into Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin (right).

The dominos fall like this:

Assuming Selanne will return for a 16th season, the Ducks can’t construct his contract until they free up salary cap space, presumably by shedding defenseman Mathieu Schneider and his $5.5 million contract.

But suitors for Schneider hinge on what teams are left out of the race to sign Sundin.

That is, assuming Sundin decides to play this season.

I’m not so sure I agree with this assessment.  The teams in the running for Sundin are said to be the Rangers, Flyers, Leafs, Habs and Canucks.  In my estimation, none of these teams would even be interested in Schneider.  The Rangers just dropped a boatload of money on their defense, the Flyers are already over the cap, the Leafs are trading salary not taking it on, the Habs could could conceivably have a place for Schneider but I don’t see the need, and the Canucks already have a deep defense corps.
