In the Saturday Headlines segment on today’s HNIC broadcast the guys touched on a number of topics that relate to the Winnipeg Jets including:
Goaltending
1) The topic of the Kings injured goalies came up. Elliotte Friedman indicated that the Kings are exploring their options which include Ondrej Pavelec but said team is likely to give Peter Budaj a chance. Nick Kypreos comment was “the other thing I heard today was don’t put it past them (Jets) to call him up….call him back if they need him. They are still unsure of their goaltending situation with Hutchinson and Hellebuyck and therefore you may need him. And what happens if Pavelec goes to L.A. and becomes a great player for them and they (Jets) miss the playoffs because of their goaltending. That would make Winnipeg look bad.
Former NHL goalie Kelly Hrudey added “You know where you really need him? It’s when the two guys really start to struggle or start to worry about themselves or they are in a situation where they are unsure if they can do the job. And why that’s important you have a veteran there is cause they can sort of lean on you….”
2) Ron MacLean was talking about Michael Hutchinson’s mask and he indicated that he would wear it in a back up role. Which of course means that Connor Hellebuyck will start. As far as I could tell the Jets bench boss hadn’t revealed that today during his media availability. I went ‘Behind the Mask’ with both Michael Hutchinson and Connor Hellebuyck (although only Hutchinson’s included talk of his Heritage Classic mask).
Jacob Trouba:
3) Elliotte Friedman said that “here in Winnipeg the word is that Kevin Cheveldayoff’s ask for Trouba has not decreased so a lot of other GMs think December 1st is when Trouba’s got to play by and I think they are just going to use as a pressure point to make a decision.”
