In the first game of this two-game set the Roadrunners, playing in Winnipeg for the first time in close to nine years, defeated the Moose with a strong 40 minutes of hockey outshooting the hometeam 31-14 and outscoring them 4-2 en route to a 4-3 win. Manitoba was hoping to end the four-game homestand with a victory so they could get back into 3rd place in the Central.
Lineup news:
After his massive tilt on Saturday no Tyrel Bauer today which means he misses his birthday game and Manitoban Dawson Barteaux returns. Still no David Gustafsson, who didn’t skate this morning, and whose return timeline remains uncertain as he deals with an injury. Only other change was a goalie swap with Domenic DiVincentiis coming in for Thomas Milic.
Moose lineup:
JAD-Zhilkin-Fagemo
Di Giuseppe-Yager-Chibrikov
Shaw-Ford-Duehr
Yoder-Julien-Barlow
Freij-Phillips
Clague-Anhorn
Sautner-Barteaux
DiVincentiis
Notable:
Like the last game the Moose got off to a good start with Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin scoring his 11th of the season off a nifty feed by JAD. That line has really been clicking. Manitoba leading 1-0 just 7:15 into the 1st and outshooting Tucson 5-1.
The home team held the visitors without a shot for close to three minutes but when the Roadrunners did get one through they scored as former Jets and Moose forward Austin Poganski tied up the game as he was able to get behind the D and redirect this shot home.
The 1st period would end tied 1-1 but with Manitoba holding a 13-8 shot advantage. But much like the last game it was Tucson who would dominate the middle and final frames of this hockey game.
They outshot the Moose 23-8 and scored three more goals which included (like last game) a power play goal against in the first minute of the 2nd period after Manitoba failed to clear on two separate occasions and Poganski got his second of the game.
It looked like a game of cat and mouse at points including on the insurance marker when Scott Perunovich went round and round the Moose end before he eventually puts this one into the back of the net to make it 3-1 for the visitors.
Tucson takes it 4-1 over Manitoba which caps a 1-3-0 homestand. Tough time to slide for the Moose as they failed to gain ground on the Stars who sit two points ahead of them (although the Moose have a game in hand).
