Penalty kill the difference again as Avs win 5-1 and take 3-1 stranglehold in first round series with Winnipeg Jets

Recap of game 4 of the 1st round series.

The penalty kill is the difference again (2PPG for Colorado) as the Avalanche win game 4 by a final score of 5-1 and take a 3-1 stranglehold on this first round series with the Winnipeg Jets.

Notable:

The Avs built an 11-1 edge and the second shot of the game for the Jets was from 200 feet. The home team took the lead on their 12th shot of the opening period as Jet killer Artturi Lehkonen gets his fourth of this series to make it 1-0.

Shots were 12-3 for Colorado when Winnipeg started to pushback. They took the next six shots of the game which included Nate Schmidt scoring his first playoff goal as a Jet to tie the game. It wasn’t uneventful as the Avs challenged for offside but the refs called it a good goal.

Marginal penalty calls in the middle frame killed the Jets momentum which they carried with them to start the 2nd period but then they were in defending mode for some time. Eventually on the third power play of the game for Colorado they made it a 2-1 game. And then less than four minutes later they made it a 3-1 game with Cale Makar scoring a beauty.

Valeri Nichushkin with another power play goal to make it a 4-1 game in the 2nd. That was the 6th PP goal for the Avs in this series on their 15th attempt.

Not surprisingly the 3rd period began with Laurent Brossoit in net as they gave Hellebuyck the rest of the afternoon off saving him for game 5.

Scary incident in the final frame as Vlad Namestnikov caught some friendly fire after a Nate Schmidt shot was deflected into his face by an Avs player. He was down and out but eventually got up and off the ice with help from the equipment staff.
