Before departing Manitoba, the Moose were riding high with a 5-1-0-0 record as they embarked on a six-game road trip through the Central Division. The trip began with a loss to the Griffins in Grand Rapids before Manitoba bounced back with a two-game sweep of the Wild in Iowa last weekend. However, the momentum didn’t last, as the Moose dropped a school-day game to the Wolves in Chicago before being shut out by the Admirals in Milwaukee. That brought them to Rockford this evening, where they were hoping to finish the road trip on a positive note against the IceHogs and return home with an even 3-3-0-0 record.
Lineup news:
Walker Duehr was finally ready to make his season debut after dealing with a lower-body injury that has hampered him since at least training camp. We also would see the Moose debut of defenceman Jack Matier.
Moose lineup:
Wahlin – Yager – Chibrikov
Gregor – Zhilkin – Ford
He – Julien – Barlow
Burnside – Yoder – Duehr
Thrun – Barteaux
Freij – Phillips
Gustafsson – Matier
Milic
Notable:
Lucas Wahlin got like ten chances during this early shift (ok that’s a bit exaggerated). And it all started by a good forecheck by the Minnesota product.
Jets prospect Brayden Yager gets a good chance early in this one as he takes this flubbed pass and turns it into a Moose opportunity.
Chase Yoder gave the Moose a 1-0 lead with this no-look turnaround backhand. That’s his third goal of the season which sets a net career high.
Noah Gregor gave the Moose a 2-0 lead with this shorthanded goal. That’s his 6th goal of the season. Danny Zhilkin picks up the assist.
Moose had controlled play for most of this 1st period but the former Manitoba captain Dominic Toninato comes out of the box and sets up a goal for the home team.
Moose held a 2-1 lead over the IceHogs after 20 minutes in Rockford. They outshot their opponent 15-5.
The middle frame didn’t start well for the visitors. They tried to kill a 5 on 3 to start it off but the IceHogs tied the game.
Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin comes oh so close to helping the Moose regain the lead but he puts a bit too much on this as he tried to get loose puck.
Then it’s Jets prospect Nikita Chibrikov who dances through the IceHogs but cannot get this backhand to go.
Jets prospect Brayden Yager with his 7th goal of the season gives the Moose a 3-2 lead. It’s a shorthanded goal as he anticipates and intercepts this pass and goes back the other way for the go ahead goal. He’s got 7G in 10 games. Had 10G in 68 games last season.
Former Moose Dylan Anhorn tied the game for his new IceHogs team in the 3rd period with this shot. He was very well liked here in Manitoba. That’s his first goal of the season.
Davis Burnside with his second of the season to help the Moose get back the lead. Nice strip and pass by Yoder.
Isaak Phillips with an absolutely beauty shorthanded goal against his former team. That gave the Moose a 5-3 lead in the 3rd period. That was their third shorthanded goal of the game (and they weren’t done there).
Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin sealed the deal with this shorthanded, long range empty netter to make it a 6-3 game for the Moose. That’s his 6th goal of the season. And according to the AHL that’s the first time since 1988 a team has scored 4 shorthanded goals in a game.
The Moose end the six-game road trip with a 6-3 win over the IceHogs. It was a historic victory as well as they matched the AHL record of four shorthanded goals in a game. They are 8-4-0 (tied for 1st league. They have scored most goals (47) in the AHL (no other team is above 40).
