The Moose kicked off their ninth season since they returned to Winnipeg with training camp today. They ended up getting a number of players from the Jets this past weekend as the NHL club whittles down their training camp numbers.
This morning Manitoba began with 27 players on the roster:
Forwards (15): Wyatt Bongiovanni, Nicholas Jones, Brad Lambert, Chaz Lucius, Nikita Chibrikov, C.J. Suess, Daniel Torgersson, Carson Golder, Mark Liwiski, Thomas Caron, Danny Katic*, Keaton Jameson*, Ryan Foss*, Colt Conrad* and Stelio Matheos*
Defence (9): Tyrel Bauer, Simon Kubicek, Dawson Barteaux, Simon Lundmark, Artemi Knaizev, Jimmy Oligny, Dean Stewart, Dmitry Kuzmin, Darick Louis-Jean*
Goalies (3): Oskari Salminen, Thomas Milic and Dante Giannuzzi*
*Invitee to camp
While they had a pair of Jets first rounders on the ice in Brad Lambert and Chaz Lucius although second rounder Nikita Chibrikov was missing. He had been dealing with something from Jets training camp.
The Jets are also dealing with some illness so they brought Brad Lambert back up to the big club which I noticed as he left the ice and went across to the space where Winnipeg is based. Head coach Rick Bowness also indicated that provided Dominic Toninato cleared waivers he would come with the Jets to Calgary.
When the clock struck 1 PM CDT we learned that of the five players the Jets placed on waivers on Sunday all but one cleared. The one who didn’t was Jansen Harkins as he got claimed by Pittsburgh. Of the four players who cleared waivers only Kristian Reichel ended up being assisgned to the Moose with the Jets retaining Dominic Toninato, Jeff Malott and Ashton Sautner.
Winnipeg also assigned Elias Salomonsson and Danny Zhilkin to the Moose. This may be the most interesting move of the day as Salomonsson was a 2022 2nd rounder and there wasn’t an expectation he would be sent to the AHL. My presumption was because he’s not a 1st rounder he’d be heading back to Skelleftea when he was feeling healthy due to NHL/SHF Transfer Agreement. Perhaps the Jets and Skelleftea have an agreement. Will find out more tomorrow.
Hear from the Moose captain as he prepares to kick off his sixth season with Manitoba. He spoke about his summer, having more time for training, captaining a youthful team, giving all guys a voice in the room and more.
Moose head coach Mark Morrison spoke about what he saw on the first day on the ice at camp, the Jets dealing with illness and how it throws a wrench into having a complete group, eagerness with a young group at camp, did he the growth in Lambert/Lucius he wanted to see over the summer, benefits for guys who were at Jets camp.
The Moose are back on the ice on Tuesday at 10 AM and at 11:30 AM.
