The Moose return home after winning their last two games on the road looking to build on that momentum with a critical six straight games at home starting with the west-leading Griffins.
Lineup news:
No changes for Manitoba who ran the same lineup as they did in their last game which they won 5-1 over the Marlies in Toronto. Two of the three college free agent signings (Lukas Gustafsson & Lucas Wahlin) get their first pro game-day experience as they took part in Moose warm-up.
They did get Danny Zhilkin back from the Jets today. He will play tomorrow.
Moose lineup:
Shaw-JAD-Di Giuseppe
Fagemo-Wagner-Duehr
Yoder-Yager-Chibrikov
Vitelli-Julien-Barlow
Phillips-Clague
Sautner-Bauer
Anhorn-Barteaux
Milic
Notable:
It was not a good start for the Moose who, less than five minutes into the game, saw the Griffins Wojciech Stachowiak split the D and goes 5-hole on Thomas Milic to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Manitoba pushed back but two brilliant saves by Grand Rapids goalie Sebastian Cossa kept him team up by a goal.
The visitors added to their lead getting a fortunate bounce and just when the home team looked like they’d cut the deficit in half Cossa shut the door and they turned back up the ice to make it a 3-0 game.
Moose continue to be dangerous shorthanded but couldn’t get it to go.
But things started to turn in the 2nd period starting with the first pro goal for Jets prospect Jacob Julien who rips home this shot to get the Moose on the board. Think we could hear the cheer all the way from London, Ontario.
And they weren’t done there as they got back-to-back goals on back-to-back shots which had them within a goal as Phil Di Giuseppe gets his 13th of the season on the power play to make it a one goal game.
Back-to-back games with a goal for Chase Yoder who scores his first in Winnipeg to bring the Moose back from a 3-0 deficit to a 3-3 game. And he celebrates it with the home crowd who are enjoying Spring Break hockey.
That was quite the turnaround period as the Moose storm back from a 3-0 deficit after 20 being outshot 11-6 to 3-3 after 40 and outshooting the Griffins 12-9 in the middle frame. Which made it 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Fast start to the final frame with both teams getting good chances for a fourth goal. The Griffins got this one but it appears a combo of it not getting to his stick and Walker Duehr getting back prevented the tap-in.
Bit if an unusual breakaway pass as it pops up and lands in the perfect spot but Walker Duehr wasn’t complaining he took it in for a chance but Cossa makes the save.
After not taking advantage of opportunities, the Moose could’t get control of a puck along the wall, the Griffins took advantage and then get a fortunate bounce to take a 4-3 lead.
While the Moose scored on back-to-back shots in the 2nd there was a bit of time (1:47) between goals. In the 3rd the Griffins went bang bang in just 14 seconds to take a 5-3 lead.
They’d add an empty netter to make it a 6-3 game. Oddly enough all nine goals were scored into the net at the north end of the rink.
A tough loss as the Moose failed to gain ground of the 3rd place Stars who sit two up on them in the Central and will end the night in 4th place.
