Game 66: Lightning 5 Jets 2 post-game recap

Post-game from the Jets dressing room as well as from Coach Maurice.

Inside Amalie Arena

The Jets win streak ends at two games as they drop this one 5-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning and fall to 39-23-4.

For those who would like to take a deeper dive into the advanced stats here are the results from tonight’s game via Natural Stat Trick.

Gameplay:

– The Bolts scored early as Yanni Gourde got behind the Jets D and then went upstairs on Connor Hellebuyck
– On the PP the Jets got one back against the best PK team in the NHL on a nifty pass by Patrik Laine to Blake Wheeler;
– Shots were 14-5 in favour of the home side after 20 minutes.
– After an aggressive attack a Bolts counter-attack resulted in a 2 on 1 which ended up in back of Jets net;
– Connor Hellebuyck was briefly knocked out of the game by a Nikita Kucherov slap shot which drew blood;
– Laurent Brossoit came in during a Jets PK and Steven Stamkos promptly blasted a shot by him to make it 3-1;
– Another shot edge in the middle frame (13-10) which gave them a 27-15 over edge after 40 minutes;
– Two more goals by the home side gave the Bolts an insurmountable 5-1 lead at midway point of final period;
– Jacob Trouba scored a weird one on a ricochet to make it 5-2 but it was too little too late.

Notable:

– Including the opening goal for Winnipeg Captain Blake Wheeler has scored in five straight games for the Jets;
– Wheeler has a seven game points streak (6G 7A);
– Patrik Laine has 4G 4A in his last seven games;
– Jacob Trouba was the only Jet with more than a point in the game finishing with a goal and an assist
– Connor Hellebuyck finished with an assist which gives him three on the season.

Coach Maurice:  When did he see Tampa start to pull away?  What was he thinking when he saw Connor Hellebuyck take that shot?  Tough break for Brossoit to come in at that point.  The fourth Bolts goal.  Missing players (17, 33 & 44).  Speed in transition game.  The challenges of the Bolts backend.
