While we are primarily a site for Winnipeg Jets news, during the dog days of summer we need to find other ways to entertain ourselves.
To kick start August in the city of Winnipeg we celebrate a multicultural festival which runs for two weeks called Folklorama. Last night at the Spirit of Ukraine Pavilion our own Ezra Ginsburg (aka @icezzyg) faced off against eight other competitors in the first ever perogy eating contest. The idea was the brainchild of Andrew ‘Hustler’ Paterson of TSN 1290 who has been talking about it for the last three months on his show ‘The Warm Up’. The rules were simple: eat as many perogies as you can in seven minutes. Yesterday his dream became a reality as the discussion moved from the airwaves to centre stage.
Prior to the contest Ez met some of the other cast of characters who would be participating in the event including an individual who went by the name ‘Dude Love’.
After some Ukrainian dancing, Hustler took to the stage to introduce the event to the capacity crowd.
With the intros out of the way the countdown began and for those unable to join us last night here is a majority of the seven minute contest sped up into 21 seconds of time lapsed video.
Or you can watch an edited video that cuts down the seven minutes to 2:46.
Once the seven minutes expired only one man had cracked the 50 perogy plateau and he was Abdul Koroma who ended the night polishing off 51 perogies.
Tony ‘Dude Love’ Derose finished in 2nd with 43 and rounding out 3rd spot was Jorge Losorada with 40 perogies demolished. Ezzy finished 7th with approximately 29 perogies eaten and was feeling a bit worse for wear following the competition.
Lots of fun was had and I’m sure that Hustler will be spending quite a bit of time dissecting last night’s 1st ever Perogy competitive eating contest at Folklorama on ‘The Warm Up’ today on TSN 1290 Winnipeg.
