Seems like every few years the spectre of a labour disruption hangs over the head of hockey fans as the NHL and NHLPA jockey for better deal from the other side. This year there have been rumblings that both sides were working towards signing an extension of the current collective bargaining agreement. Hockey insiders revealed this week that the two sides had reached an understanding for extending the current CBA.
The deal will still require ratification from their respective boards before the CBA extension becomes official. We heard in Los Angeles from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh discussing the four-year extension of the current CBA which you can watch below, although as noted above, they didn’t want to get into specifics since the deal is still not official.
Some of the changes that are expected to be implemented include:
- 84-game regular season/4 game preseason
- max contract length 7 years/6 years with new team for UFAs
- no game-day dress code for players
- full-time EBUG position for all teams
- playoff salary cap system closing LTIR loophole
