It has been well documented that it is going to be a busy summer ahead for Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and his staff as they head into an off-season with plenty of uncertainty surrounding the roster composition for next season. According to CapFriendly the Jets have just 12 players under contact for the 2019-20 campaign which means there are a number of UFAs and RFAs that will be in need of new contracts either with Winnipeg or with new NHL or AHL teams.
The list is as follows, namely;
Unrestricted free agents (UFAs):
Kevin Hayes
Brandon Tanev
Par Lindholm
Matt Hendricks
Tyler Myers
Ben Chiarot
Bogdan Kiselevich
Restricted free agents (RFAs):
Andrew Copp (Arbitration eligible)
Patrik Laine
Kyle Connor
Jacob Trouba (Arbitration eligible)
Nathan Beaulieu (Arbitration eligible)
Joe Morrow (Arbitration eligible)
Laurent Brossoit (Arbitration eligible)
And it won’t just be the Jets that have players in need of new contracts as their AHL club the Manitoba Moose also have a number of players, both prospects and depth players, who will be in need of new deals, including:
Unrestricted free agents (UFAs):
Alex Broadhurst (Group VI)
Nicolas Kerdiles (Group VI)
Seth Griffith (Group VI)
JC Lipon (Group VI)
Cameron Schilling
Restricted free agents (RFAs):
Marko Dano (Arbitration eligible)
C.J. Suess (Arbitration eligible)
Logan Shaw (Arbitration eligible)
Nelson Nogier
Jimmy Oligny (Arbitration eligible)
Eric Comrie (Arbitration eligible)
Ken Appleby (Arbitration eligible)
Glossary:
Arbitration eligible is “a contract negotiation method that uses a third party arbitrator to determine a fair contract term and length for an expiring RFA player. Arbitration can be requested if a player meets the following conditions.” For the conditions required click here.
Group VI free agent is:
A player whose contract is expiring and meets all of the following conditions shall become an unrestricted free agent (UFA):
– The player is 25 years or older (as of June 30th of the calendar year the contract is expiring).
– The player has completed 3 or more professional seasons – qualified by 11 or more professional games (for an 18/19 year old player), or 1 or more professional games (for a player aged 20 or older). This can include NHL, minor league, and European professional league seasons played while under an SPC.
– The player has played less than 80 NHL games, or 28 NHL games of 30 minutes or greater for a goaltender.
All of which translates to a very busy spring for this organization as they try to get some big contracts done (Laine, Connor) and also get some key pieces signed on the dotted line. We will have plenty more to come regarding the Jets and Moose roster.
