Winnipeg Free Press: Taking stock of division. The Hurricanes have made the biggest improvements this offseason and were the talk of the division. The Jets made some solid but not jaw dropping moves which sticks with the build long-term mantra. How they will do this season is anyone’s guess but the Southeast Division is not a walk in the park like it once was.

Edmonton Journal: Insider details of NHL’s new offer to NHLPA. Should the players be happy? They likely should be, but that does not mean we won’t be seeing a counteroffer from Donald Fehr. He won’t want to be seen as too eager to accept the NHL deal, regardless of whether is it fair or not.
TSN: New NHL proposal reduces financial demands. Back to bargaining 101, ask for the moon in your first proposal, dial it back in your second and then wait.
Philadelphia Inquirer: Would a lockout be dangerous? It isn’t that core hockey fans/markets will not come back to the NHL. They will grumble, shake their fists in the air and then resign themselves to return to the game they love. The catch-22 of the lockout is that it is done to help the teams that are struggling (or so the league claims) but those same teams will lose any momentum as their casual fan base turns to other sports with their entertainment dollars for next year, and possibly longer.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins alums recall the stress of lockout in 1994-95. It is much more likely that we are in 1994-95 territory this time around and not 2004-05 which is slightly better news for fans.
NHL news:
Toronto Sun: Fred Brathwaite wants one last chance. Old goalies appear to be coming out of the woodwork to re-start their NHL careers. The 39 year old Brathwaite attempts to revive a career that has not seen NHL action since 2004 with Columbus.
Washington Times: Jeff Halpern preparing despite NHL CBA uncertainty. For a veteran like Halpern he cannot afford to take time off before the season begins. He has to continue his training regiment as he knows there are always guys who are younger looking to pick off a veteran who losses a step.
FS West: Boudreau ready for first full season in Anaheim. The coach with one of the quickest coaching turnarounds in the history of the NHL was able to get something started well with the Ducks last season, despite falling short of the playoffs.
Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area: Arena ‘conversation’ starts in Virginia Beach. While this is likely a play for an NBA team, an NHL team always seems to get mentioned when a new arena project is unveiled, despite the fact that in this instance, there is a 0.0% chance the NHL will head to Virginia.
