While every professional hockey player wants to play in the NHL, there are only so many spots available on a roster. For 22-year-old Brad Lambert, who was selected in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft by Winnipeg, that meant finding himself on waivers for the first time in his career on Tuesday. We learned on Wednesday that he had cleared waivers and would be assigned to the Manitoba Moose.
He practiced with the team yesterday and again today ahead of this evening’s game against the Marlies. Despite the disappointment of not being in the NHL, Lambert has maintained a very positive attitude about the opportunity ahead of him with the Moose.
When asked what it was like finding himself on waivers for the first time in his career, Lambert admitted it was “nerve wracking” and “very disappointing” but then offered a mature perspective on the situation.
“In life when things don’t go your way you have two options, either to sit there and feel sorry for yourself or go do something about it and keep chasing your dream. That’s what I am going to do. Obviously a disappointing experience but I’m just going to try to make the most of it.”
He also recognizes the opportunity ahead of him with a Manitoba team that leads the AHL in goals scored and sits among the league leaders in the standings. It’s an excellent environment for Lambert to rediscover his offensive touch, regain some confidence and continue working toward his goal of returning to the NHL.
Asked about getting power play opportunities with the Moose, Lambert offered an answer that went beyond his role on special teams and spoke to his outlook as he works his way back to the NHL.
“I’m still doing what I love. Taking all the positives out of it. Keep working towards that goal, still play in the NHL, still hope to have a long career there. That dream is never going to die.”
He’ll be in action this evening down at Canada Life Centre with a 7 PM puck drop.
