On today’s Daily Dose of Illegal Curve Hockey, we discussed the ‘next steps’ with Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension by the Jets set to come to an end on Friday. Presumably, for him to be cleared to return (even if it wasn’t to play for Winnipeg), he would have to undergo a physical. From there, the team could potentially tell him to stay away while no longer being suspended as they continue working towards a trade.
With Heritage Classic weekend beginning tomorrow and culminating in Sunday’s game between the Jets and Canadiens at Princess Auto Stadium, the situation had the potential to overshadow the entire event. However, according to TSN insider Darren Dreger, the two sides may have found a way to avoid that awkwardness, at least temporarily.
He reports:
“There’s a sense there could be an agreement between the Jets and Hellebuyck to delay his physical until a later date out of respect to the Heritage classic. This weekend is about the game. Meanwhile, the focus to trade the star goalie remains.”
Dreger indicated more details would be coming when he appears on SportsCentre, which you can watch here:
While there are still plenty of moving parts in this fluid situation, finding a way to put things aside for Heritage Classic weekend would probably be in everyone’s best interest.
