Video Description:
In this episode of 32 Thoughts, Kyle Bukauskas and Elliotte Friedman begin by delving into the latest surrounding Connor Hellebuyck as his team-ordered suspension comes to an end. Runs just over 13 minutes.
Dave’s Note:
Friedman began by saying he would bet against Connor Hellebuyck being in Winnipeg next weekend. He indicated that even if No. 37 hasn’t been traded by Friday, when his suspension comes to an end, the Jets could tell him they’ll pay him but don’t want him reporting to the team. He added that Winnipeg doesn’t want the Hellebuyck situation overshadowing the Heritage Classic.
Friedman said Hellebuyck informed the Jets around their home opener that he was ready to return. He reiterated that Winnipeg had the ability to suspend him for a “reasonable” period of time because he failed to report to training camp. According to Friedman, the lawyers determined that a reasonable period was approximately 2.5 to 3 weeks.
As for potential trade destinations, Friedman identified several teams that could hold the keys to resolving the situation. He mentioned the Sabres, who have expressed interest in Hellebuyck and are a team the goalie is willing to join. He also brought up the Rangers, not because they’re pursuing Hellebuyck, but because a move involving New York could trigger a chain reaction around the league.
Friedman also wondered whether the Utah Mammoth could be a factor, noting that it’s an important season for the organization and that they’re known to grind through trade negotiations. He mentioned the Hurricanes but doesn’t see a deal with Carolina being particularly easy to complete. While he assumes there are other teams involved that he isn’t aware of, he believes those are among the key teams to watch. He also discussed the Kings but doesn’t see a natural fit there.
Friedman reiterated that the Jets would prefer making no deal over a bad deal, although he acknowledged that position becomes more difficult to maintain when you’re paying a player not to be with the team.
