Manitoba Moose erupt for eight goals to complete season-opening weekend sweep of Chicago Wolves

Recap of the game.

The Moose came off a very impressive performance by Jets goalie prospect Domenic DiVincentiis on Saturday as he made 36 saves in a 3-0 shutout victory for Manitoba. We also saw Kevin He make history once he stepped out onto the ice, in addition to scoring his first goal as a pro, while the rest of the kids showed they were ready to make an impact right away.

The question was whether they could carry that momentum into today against last season’s Western Conference champions.

Lineup news:

No changes for them except Thomas Milic got the net.

Moose lineup:

Chibrikov – Yager – Wahlin
Gregor – Zhilkin – Ford
He – Julien – Barlow
Empey – Yoder – Burnside

Phillips – Freij
Sautner – Mayo
Gustafsson – Thrun

Milic

Notable:

Lucas Wahlin got his first of the season as he opened the scoring early in this one to give the Moose a 1-0 lead. He took advantage of a Keystone Cops collision that took out two Wolves.

Jets prospect Alfons Freij scored his first AHL goal off a nice little rush by Winnipeg’s 2024 second-round pick as he fed Brayden Yager and then chipped home the rebound. He did say he golfed a lot this summer back home in Sweden and it showed as he gave the Moose a 2-0 lead.

It isn’t just the Jets who had a red-hot power play. Brayden Yager gave the Moose a 3-0 lead as the Winnipeg prospect fired home the loose puck for his first of the season.

However, the visitors pushed back after being outshot 11-3 and outscored 3-0, going on a 5-1 shot edge but more importantly scoring three times to tie the game at 3-3- after 20 minutes.

The Moose re-took the lead over the Wolves as Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin fired home his first of the season. Noah Gregor provided a nice screen on the goal and picked up his second assist of the game.

That OHL line started heating up. Kevin He scored his second goal of the season, and his first against a goaltender, off a great pass from Colby Barlow. It started with another smart play by Barlow in the neutral zone before he found He with a terrific feed.

Noah Gregor, who looked dangerous in Game 1 for the Moose, continued to be in Game 2. He made it 6-3 for Manitoba as he picked up his third point of the afternoon. Danny Zhilkin found him with a nice pass in front of the net.

Goal scoring certainly didn’t look like it was going to be an issue for this club and that would continue…

First pro goal alert as Davis Burnside made it 7-3 for the Moose over the Wolves. Someone tell Ohio State that their former captain had his first as a pro. Nice work by Burnside to create the turnover before finishing the play himself.

Jets prospect Brayden Yager has his second of the game to make it 8-3 for the Moose. Great shot by the centre to give him three points in the game.

The Moose swept the Wolves in their season-opening series with an 8-3 victory this afternoon in Winnipeg. Manitoba improved to 2-0-0 with 11 goals for and just three against. And the kids showed they were more than alright.

Multi-point game:

Brayden Yager 2G 1A
Noah Gregor 1G 2A
Danny Zhilkin 1G 1A
Lucas Wahlin 1G 1A
