Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers: Today’s Hockey Headlines | September 18, 2026

A daily roundup of Jets, Moose coverage and all the pro hockey news that matters in Manitoba and beyond.

Note: Before Day 2 of Jets training camp gets underway, catch up on all the news, line combinations, injury updates and player/coach media here from the opening day at Hockey for All Centre.

Note II: We did a lot of media availabilities on Day 1. We spoke with GM Kevin Cheveldayoff (watch here), Kyle Connor (watch here), Mark Scheifele (watch here), Coach Scott Arniel (watch here), Gabriel Vilardi (watch here) and Isak Rosén (watch here) on Day 1 of Jets training camp.

Note III: Camp continues today with Team B hitting the ice at 10 a.m. CT, followed by Team A at 1 p.m. CT. All media availabilities can be watched here or on our YouTube channel.

Note IV: Jets prospect Samuel Hrenák opened his USHL season in style, making 22 saves on 23 shots as the Fargo Force earned a 2-1 win over Green Bay. The 2026 third-round pick begins the year with a 1.00 GAA and .957 save percentage.

Note V: Missed this the other day, but Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reported that Ottawa was considering Logan Stanley or Ben Hutton on a PTO with Artem Zub injured. It appears Hutton got the call, but it’s wild to think Stanley was projected by some to land a five-year deal worth $5 million annually in free agency and is now potentially limited to a PTO-type opportunity.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Why the Winnipeg Jets can’t afford to make an example of Connor Hellebuyck. (Paywall). No point in a hollow victory.

Sportsnet: Clock ticking on Jets’ Cheveldayoff to resolve Hellebuyck situation. I think the GM has some time right now. Until there are losses pilling up he would be able to buy himself some time to try and secure the best deal possible.

TSN: ‘Heartbroken’ Jets open training camp without Hellebuyck. Words from guys like Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele, who have been teammates with Hellebuyck since he joined the club were interesting to hear.

Global News: Jets GM says Hellebuyck trade must yield proper return: ‘We are still trying to win’. It’s quite the task as they still see this core as one that can get things done in the playoffs. If that’s the case then they need to bring in pieces that will continue that objective.
