The writing has been on the wall since Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck released a public statement in late August indicating he believed a trade from Winnipeg was best for him at this point in his career. Despite being only two years into his seven-year deal, his frustration at the end of the 2025-26 season has the three-time Vezina Trophy winner and Hart Trophy recipient looking for a new hockey home.

We’ve been on the record since that public statement that we don’t believe he will ever wear a Jets uniform again.
Hellebuyck failed to report for medicals today and, as a result, the Jets have suspended him. The team released the following statement:
“ The Winnipeg Jets announced today they have suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for failure to report to training camp.
General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will address the media at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 17th, at hockey for all centre.”
With Hellebuyck suspended and not expected to report, the focus now shifts to whether the stalemate prompts renewed trade conversations or stretches into the regular season.
This marks just the second time since 2011 that the Jets have suspended a player for failing to report to training camp. They also did so in 2019 with Dustin Byfuglien. That situation was different, however, as Byfuglien had decided he was finished playing hockey and, despite having years remaining on his contract, had no interest in continuing his career.
