Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers: Today’s Hockey Headlines | September 8, 2026

A daily roundup of Jets, Moose coverage and all the pro hockey news that matters in Manitoba and beyond.

Note: The Jets’ informal skates offered an early look at some of the organization’s young talent, with several prospects and younger players already back on the ice ahead of training camp. There are still a number of established veterans who have yet to be seen skating, but here are our notes and observations from the first session we observed on Labour Day Monday.

Note II: With just over a week until training camp begins, a number of former Jets remain without contracts. Gustav Nyquist is 86 games shy of 1,000 in the NHL, so perhaps he will accept a PTO in hopes of earning another NHL season. Alternatively, he could continue his career overseas, although the SHL season in Sweden begins in 11 days. Logan Stanley and Patrik Laine are also still without NHL teams. Stanley is the bigger surprise, given how often the 6-foot-7 defenceman was discussed last season as a desirable unrestricted free agent.

Jets news:

Sportsnet: One thing to remember about each NHL team ahead of training camp. Of course the Winnipeg thing has to do with Connor Hellebuyck. I do not see him reports to camp if he isn’t dealt.

Daily Faceoff: Which 2026 draft picks could start the season in the NHL? Steven has the eighth overall pick Viggo Björck on his list. Even just watching him yesterday work against some NHL veterans and you can see how his brain is processing the game at a high level. It is going to be fascinating to see how things play out for the 18-year old Swede.

The SportsCage: What’s next for Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets? Sharky was joined by Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press on The SportsCage to chat about Connor Hellebuyck. They discuss the situation with the trade request, where he could end up, if he’s going to show up for training camp and more.
