The Moose looked like a team not ready to start the game on time on Friday afternoon as the Griffins rolled out to a three goal edge after 20 minutes. Credit to the home side as they fought back with three goals of their own (including the first pro goal for prospect Jacob Julien). But it was for naught as Grand Rapids would score three more in the final frame (which included an empty netter) to win the game 6-3.
They did get prospect Danny Zhilkin back from the Jets yesterday after he played a couple of games for the big club which included getting his first pro point.
Lineup news:
Couple of pro debuts in Winnipeg as college free agents Lukas Gustafsson & Lucas Wahlin played their first game of their pro careers. Out came Reece Vitelli, Fabian Wagner and Dawson Barteaux.
Moose lineup:
Shaw-JAD-Di Giuseppe
Fagemo-Zhilkin-Duehr
Yoder-Yager-Chibrikov
Barlow-Julien-Wahlin
Phillips-Clague
Sautner-Bauer
L.Gustafsson-Anhorn
DiVincentiis
Notable:
Moose held the top-ranked Griffins without a shot for first 6 minutes and 30 seconds to open the game. They held a 5-0 shot edge to start as they’ve come out with plenty of jump.
Quick movement on the PP by the Griffins and they open the scoring with John Leonard getting his 32nd.
Late power play for the Moose nullified as they give up a shorthanded chance which results in a penalty. 4 on 4 hockey coming up to end the 1st. And they got burnt because they gave up a goal with three seconds left in the 1st to go down 2-0 after 20 minutes.
Moose needed an early middle frame response and they got it as Dylan Anhorn cut the deficit in half. He matches his career high he set last season and he did it in eight fewer games.
Oddly enough that meant 12 goals (dating back to yesterday’s game) had been scored in the net at the north end of the arena.
But just 45 seconds later the first goal into the south side net gave the visitors a 3-1 lead and chased goalie Domenic DiVincentiis from the net.
It appeared the goalie pull worked to wake up the home team as they responded just ten seconds later to get back within a goal as Colby Barlow scored his fourth of the season with Lucas Wahlin picking up the primary assist which was his first point as a pro.
But the fourth goal in a 2:05 span gave the Griffins a two goal lead again as Red Wings prospect Anton Johansson had his first AHL goal as he finishes a frenetic sequence with a bit of a plinko goal.
Another first AHL goal for a Red Wings prospect today as Eddie Genborg (2025 2nd) puts this one home. I know Winnipeg has adopted drafting Swedish prospects but this is quite next level accommodation. Guess it really is Friendly Manitoba.
Tyrel Bauer playing physical as you’d expect.
And the wheels fell off even more in the 3rd period scoring a 6th and 7th goal.
Moose get outscored by Griffins 13-5 in back-to-back games as Grand Rapids takes this one 7-2. It was a tough couple of games for Manitoba who failed to gain ground on Texas.
The out-of-town scoreboard provided some good and bad news for Manitoba. Texas won so they move six ahead (although the Moose have a game in hand) and more importantly Milwaukee lost so they will remain three points back.
