The Moose are back home this weekend for a quick two-game set before they head back out on the road for four. They kicked it off with a 3-2 victory on Friday night over the Marlies and were looking to keep that rolling this afternoon in downtown Winnipeg.
Lineup news:
Still no David Gustafsson as he continues to deal with an injury. He’s missed five straight games. Fabian Wagner came out for Tyson Empey.
Moose lineup:
Fagemo-Zhilkin-Duehr
Shaw-Ford-Di Giuseppe
Julien-Yager-Empey
Barlow-JAD-Chibrikov
Sautner-Bauer
Anhorn-Phillips
Clague-Barteaux
Milic
Notable:
Was watching former Moose Logan Shaw in warm-up. He last played for Manitoba during the 2019-20 season. Six years later there is just one player from that roster still with the team (David Gustafsson) & just two still with Jets (Ville Heinola & Eric Comrie)
100 games in antlers for the pride of Foxwarren, Manitoba and Moose defenceman Dawson Barteaux.
The Moose PK, ranked 4th overall in the AHL, is partly that good because they don’t just sit back. Often they have an attack mentality which saw them be the more dangerous team on the Marlies PP which included this shorthanded 3 on 1 which included two of Manitoba’s Dman (Dylan Anhorn & Isaak Phillips) joining the rush up the ice.
Jets goalie prospect Thomas Milic was very good in this hockey game making a number of very good stops. And when he needed a little assistance his teammates were there to bail him out.
Approaching the midpoint of the 3rd the teams traded good chances to open the scoring. First it was Parker Ford who found Phil Di Giusseppe who couldn’t get the puck to settle and then the Marlies countered but Milic made another big stop.
That was big as less than a minute later some good work by the Moose to create opportunity as Di Giuseppe made the initial play, then captain Mason Shaw grabbed the puck and found Ford who had secured himself some soft ice and scored the first goal of the game.
Even as the game wound down and they were protecting the one goal lead the Moose continued to attack which led to a Marlies penalty with 2:13 left in the game which allowed Manitoba to keep the puck in the Toronto end for almost all of the time remaining in the game.
The Moose defeated the Marlies 1-0 to sweep the weekend series. Manitoba improves to 26-19-5-1 which gives them 58 points and puts them in 3rd place in the Central.
Multi-point game:
None.
