Stars hold off Manitoba Moose 2–1 as winning streaks collide in Texas

Recap of the game.

The Moose left Manitoba having won five of six including three straight games but they were coming up against an even hotter team in Texas as the Stars had won five straight games coming into tonight’s contest.

Lineup news:

With Elias Salomonsson and Isaak Phillips back it meant Dawson Barteaux and Dylan Anhorn came out. Shame as Dylan has been very good for Manitoba. Also Walker Duehr will miss his fourth straight game with a LBI.

Moose lineup:

Shaw – Gustafsson- Chibrikov
Lambert – Ford – Di Giuseppe
Julien– Yager – JAD
Barlow – Zhilkin – Fagemo

Heinola – Salomonsson
Phillips– Clague
Sautner – Bauer

DiVincentiis

Notable:

Things got off to an inauspicious start as Nikita Chibrikov took a high-sticking penalty just six seconds into the game. That would be a theme for the remainder of the game. Manitoba didn’t give up a shot on the penalty as they came into the game with the 3rd best PK in the AHL which would also be a theme of this game.

The Stars got two goals in 36 seconds in the fourth minute of the opening period which lead would hold up until the end of the contest.

Manitoba would not allow a shot for the rest of the period and that included killing another high-sticking penalty ( a double minor) and then another penalty to Chibrikov at the end of the frame.

After giving up the two quick ones, Jets goalie prospect Domenic DiVincentiis settled in making some big stops to keep it close for the visitors.

Another Jets prospect in Brad Lambert might have had a half dozen chances to score in this one. After a great chance in the 1st period he had another one in the 2nd but couldn’t get it to go.

There was at least one Jets/Moose fan in attendance at Cedar Park, Texas for the game this evening.

At the end of 40 the Moose were still trailing by two goals but because they had killed five penalties their road PK had improved to 2nd best in the AHL at 87.5%.

They would end up killing another high-sticking penalty which Mason Shaw took early in the 3rd to go 6/6 on the PK.

It looked like the Moose were gonna make this one interesting as the captain Mason Shaw scored his team leading 13th of the season on the 6 on 5 with goalie pulled to bring his club within one.

And then twice in the final minute Lambert could not finish off these two glorious Grade A chances to tie the game for the Moose.

One team’s streak was bound to end as the Moose, winners of three straight, faced the Stars, winners of five in a row and it was Texas who held on for a 2–1 victory. The Moose outshot them 25-15, went 6/6 on PK but were unable to bury their chances.

As a result of the loss Manitoba drops to 22-16-3-0 on the season and Texas is now just one point back of them for 3rd place in the Central. Worth noting that the Stars have played three more games than the Moose.
