Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck shares his thoughts on the ‘goalie interference that wasn’t’ according to the NHL

Good insight from number 37.

Anyone who watched the Jets 7-4 win over the Lightning on Sunday knows that there was a somewhat controversial start to the game as the Lightning scored but it seemed like it would be called back for goalie interference. It seemed clear that Connor Hellebuyck was pushed back into his net by the stick of Conor Geekie (the Strathclair, MB product playing in his first NHL game in Winnipeg).

It was evidently not that clear as it was ruled a good goal on the ice and thereafter confirmed as a good goal by the NHL. Watching it live it was hard to see how that would be called a good goal after what appeared to be pretty clear cut goalie interference.

Here was the official explanation from the NHL:

Video review determined that no goaltender interference infractions occurred as Conor Geekie made a play on a loose puck in the crease prior to Brandon Hagel’s goal. The decision was made in accordance with Rule 69.7 which states, in part, that “in a rebound situation, or where a goalkeeper and attacking player(s) are simultaneously attempting to play a loose puck, whether inside or outside the crease, incidental contact will be permitted, and any goal that is scored as a result thereof will be allowed.”

Today following practice Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck was asked to share his thoughts on the play. He also provided insight as to how he’s tried to help the league make things more black and white, less grey.

Interesting comments from the two-time Vezina winner.
