Day 2 interviews: In case you missed anything from Friday we spoke with Nino Niederreiter (watch here), Colby Barlow (watch here) as well as head coach Scott Arniel (watch here).
Note: The second day of training camp wasn’t quite as busy as the first although there was some unfortunate health news surrounding Ville Heinola who has an infection in his ankle. We had it covered from the morning session with Team Lesuk (see here) to the afternoon skate with Team Neufeld (see here). Today is a Jets game day so the game group will skate at 10 AM with the non-game groups skating at 11:30 AM and then having a scrimmage at 12:30 PM. Be sure you’re subscribed to our YouTube channel to get all the interviews. The game against the Wild is at 7 PM.
Note II: While the rest of the unsigned RFAs in the NHL are getting their new contracts (Devils signed Dawson Mercer yesterday to a three-year, four million dollar contract) the Jets and Cole Perfetti appear to remain apart. It will be interesting to see if this gets resolved as it’s really just Perfetti and Jeremy Swayman (Bruins) who remain unsigned. Technically the Blues have Nikita Alexandrov left as an RFA, although he is at their camp on a PTO as they have 50 NHL contracts currently signed.
Note III: Hopefully you’ll join us at hockey for all centre as we take the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on the road for Jets Fan Fest starting at 9 AM. We’ll be joined by radio play-by-play voice of the Jets Paul Edmonds and Sr. host/producer Sara Orlesky.
Jets news:
Winnipeg Sun: Jets’ Heinola out indefinitely after infection in surgically-repaired ankle. Cannot imagine how frustrating it must be for him after making the team last year following a tremendous summer of training but being set back by the injury only to have another summer of work blow up because of this infection. Hopefully for the player it’s a minor setback as opposed to a potential replay of last season.
Winnipeg Sun: Nino Niederreiter embracing senior member designation. When he told us yesterday that he was the oldest player on the team it was somewhat shocking.
Winnipeg Free Press: Jets goalie hopeful an epicurean. (Paywall). Might be the first time I’ve ever had to google a word in a headline but not surprisingly for a relative teetotaler like myself it has to do with Kaapo Kahkonen’s taste in wine. Interesting stuff from Mike on the netminder’s choice to sign with Winnipeg given he’s behind a guy who plays 60+ games most seasons.
Winnipeg Free Press: Contract up in air, but Jets’ Appleton ready to roll. (Paywall). The sixth rounder from 2015 has found himself a home in Winnipeg playing alongside Adam Lowry and Nino Niederreiter.
Winnipeg Free Press: Heinola’s surgically repaired ankle infected. (Paywall). Tough, tough news for the 2019 1st rounder.
Winnipeg Free Press: Old man Niederreiter adds teaching role to list of duties. (Paywall). He really has settled into his role with the Jets.
Global News: New Winnipeg Jets coach Scott Arniel up to the job. John Shannon gives the new bench boss a vote of confidence with his latest column.
