Day 1 interviews: In case you missed anything from Thursday we spoke with Josh Morrissey (watch here), Nikita Chibrikov (watch here), Vlad Namestnikov (watch here) as well as head coach Scott Arniel (watch here) and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff (watch here).
Note: It was an incredibly busy first day of training camp in Winnipeg and we had it covered from the morning session with Team Neufeld (see here) to the afternoon skate with Team Lesuk (see here). They will flip sessions today with Team Lesuk skating at 10 AM and Team Neufeld at 1 PM. Be sure you’re subscribed to our YouTube channel to get all the interviews.
Note II: We waited to see if Cole Perfetti would take to the ice yesterday morning with Team Neufeld but he was not skating as the two sides had not yet reached a deal to get the RFA under contract. While it’s clear the GM in Winnipeg would like to get it done it’s also clear he’s wanting it done in a way that works for his hockey club.
Note III: Our new writer Connor Hrabchak kicked off training camp looking at the opportunity in front of Jets prospect Brad Lambert.
Jets news:
Winnipeg Sun: Josh Morrissey looking for the next step. Usually number 44 is a little more sunny but it seemed clear he was resolute in moving on from last season and sounded like he learned a valuable lesson which he will look to not repeat this year.
Winnipeg Sun: Don’t read too much into the camp-opening lines, Jets’ Arniel says. I was a smidge too busy yesterday so I missed Jets fans going nuts over day one lines but heard that folks on the old twitter machine were rather concerned with the composition of things. Reminder it was day one of training camp with 53 players in camp.
Winnipeg Sun: Jets’ GM Cheveldayoff would offer Perfetti the moon if it were up to him. As I indicated in note II it was clear he will do what he feels is in the best short and long term interests of his hockey club.
Winnipeg Free Press: Scott Arniel quick to put his stamp on Jets. (Paywall). It was clear in our chat with the new bench boss that what happened in the past was in the past and that he was leading a new regime even if it looked similar to the one previously in charge.
Winnipeg Free Press: Morrissey focused on improving, leaving disappointments in the past. (Paywall). Mike and Ken with more on what number 44 had to say on Thursday.
The Athletic Winnipeg: What we saw and learned on Day 1 of Winnipeg Jets training camp. (Paywall). Murat gives you his insight into what he saw at hockey for all centre on Thursday.
Sportsnet: What should RFA Cole Perfetti’s next contract look like? Jacob attempts to answer the question that currently has the two sides at an impasse.
CBC: Jets looking to young players to build roster after off-season departures. At least in the first couple of games folks will get a chance to see those young guns in action.
