A few days ago Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff was in a conversation on his show where he was discussing Hurricanes Martin Necas and teams who were interested in the recent RFA. After taking about the Sabres he moved on to the Jets and this is what he had to say about Winnipeg’s involvement:
“There was another deal, I think on the table. I don’t know how seriously Carolina considered it but I believe it was Winnipeg and I think Winnipeg offered…”
To which his podcast partner said “Ehlers” and to which Frank said no to and then continued:
“Nope. I think they offered Rutger McGroarty, Cole Perfetti and some pick. I think it was some combination if I have that correct. Perfetti, McGroarty and a pick for Marty Necas. And that wasn’t getting it done either. Either didn’t get it done or that wasn’t a place he was going to sign.”
Necas was a 12th overall pick back in 2017 who scored 24 goals last season while adding 29 assists for 53 points in 77 games for the Hurricanes. He also had put up 71 points (28G 43A) in 82 games the season prior. He was an RFA prior to signing a two-year, $13 million contract with Carolina on July 29th.
Today Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun added some clarity on twitter:
“Still seeing that the #NHLJets offered Perfetti to Carolina. This didn’t happen. Carolina wanted Perfetti in a possible trade. The Jets didn’t want to trade him. And ultimately, any deal for Martin Necas wasn’t going to happen as he wasn’t going to sign long-term in Winnipeg.”

Bit more clarity on this situation as folks in Winnipeg wait for the team to sign their final RFA of the summer.
