Winnipeg Jets sign RFA defenceman Declan Chisholm to a one-year contract

Final RFA gets a new contract.

AHL All-Star Declan Chisholm has himself a new contact with the Jets after the club that drafted him in the 5th round of the 2018 Draft agreed to a one-year contact with the smooth-skating, left-shot defenceman. The contract is worth $775,000 in the NHL.

While Chisholm knows it is going to be in tough trying to break in on the left side of the Jets defence with Morrissey, Dillon and Samberg occupying said space, the Ontario product isn’t afraid of a challenge. As he said to me in our year-end Moose roundtable about his mindset:

“You can’t worry about the other guys you’re competing against. You can only go in and control what you can control. I’m gonna go in there and do my best. I am confident in my skillset and I think I’ve proven myself again after a great season with the Moose. So I think I am going to go in there with all the confidence I built up throughout this year and just do what I can do at camp and earn a spot. That’s all you can do.”

He had a break out season finishing with five goals and 38 assists for 43 points in 59 games. He also had four assists in five playoffs games for the Moose.

To date he’s played two NHL games for Winnipeg but given he is no longer waiver exempt and the likelihood of him slipping through waivers are less than slim to none, he is going to have a shot to play more games in the NHL this season.
