Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Your source for all the latest Jets, Moose & Ice news, video and audio.

Note: While there was lots of Jets news on Saturday the most significant was the ceremony and unveiling of the Dale Hawerchuk statue in front of his family, friends, fellow players and 1000s of Manitobans. Following the official ceremony Mark Chipman, Mark Scheifele and Dale’s sons Eric and Ben spoke about the ceremony.

Note II: It was also a significant day for the training camp roster as the team reduced it by 16 skaters which included placing four players on waivers. The training camp roster is now at 31 players.

Note III: Today the Jets are scheduled to be back on the ice for day 11 of training camp starting at 12 noon.

Jets news:

Sportsnet: Heinola, Samberg making cases for sixth spot on defence in loss to Oilers. From before the start of training camp and likely to the end of it this was always going to be the most fascinating roster spot battle. Ken also wrote about the play of Big Bad Brad Lambert and Cole Perfetti from last night’s game .

Sportsnet: ‘He inspired us all to be better people’: Jets pay tribute to Hawerchuk. There was plenty of inspiration coming from the corner of Hargrave and Graham on Saturday.

Winnipeg Sun: Perfetti pots pair; Jets lose shootout to Oilers. Seemed rather appropriate that the player the Jets drafted 10th overall, whose drafting was announced by Dale Hawerchuk’s wife Crystal, would have a big impact on the game last night.

Winnipeg Sun: Emotional day for Jets family as Ducky returns home. Paul recaps what was an emotional day for the city, fans, his family and basically everyone who watched or participated with the ceremony.

Winnipeg Sun: Another Hawerchuk in the Jets fold? That’s an interesting name to be at Moose training camp. I can only imagine how fans would react seeing the name Hawerchuk on the ice in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Free Press: Perfetti scores twice for Jets in shootout loss. (Paywall). While we tend not to put much importance of pre-season games, associate coach Scott Arniel  did speak earlier that day about the importance of the exhibition games for the 2020 1st rounder given how few contests he played last season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Friends, family, fans throng downtown to see statue of Jets great Dale Hawerchuk. (Paywall). From the moment it began it was a beautifully done ceremony which honoured both Dale Hawerchuk the player and Dale Hawerchuk the person.

CBC: ‘He is home again’: Dale Hawerchuk statue unveiled at Winnipeg’s True North Square. His wife Crystal’s words were very poignant.

Edmonton Sun: Skinner helps upset-minded Edmonton Oilers take down the Jets. If you are curious about a game review from a writer that covers the Jets opponent then check this out.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show: Saturday Show. Lots of Jets talk on the show including: Jets training camp battles. Which players have earned themselves a spot. Where should Brad Lambert play this season? If the Jets were to have a forward play D who would it be? We were also joined by Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press and Hailey Salvian of The Athletic.
