Moose burnt by penalties as Senators comeback to win in a shootout

Recap of the Moose game.

The Moose came into the game having won their last two contests and were looking to close out their final series of this nine-game homestand with a couple more.

Lineup changes:

With Ville Heinola recalled up to the Jets I thought it might be an opportunity to get 2019 2nd rounder Simon Lundmark into a game but the coaching staff went with veteran Dman Nelson Nogier. Only other change from last game was Todd Burgess came off the 4th line and was replaced by Thomas Caron.

Moose lineup:

Malott – Gustafsson – Poganski
Polei – Maier – Jones
Suess – Meireles – Lynch
Eyssimont – Hutchinson – Caron

Samberg – Kovacevic
Chisholm – Gawanke
Oligny –  Nogier

Notable:

Nick Hutchinson banged home his first ever AHL goal to give the Moose a 1-0 lead.

Nice play in the neutral zone by Nicholas Jones led to a nice 2 on 0 for the Moose which was finished off by alternate captain Cole Maier who continues a strong 2021-22 campaign with his 13th goal of the season.

Mikey Eyssimont played in his 200th AHL game.

Great pass by Jeff Malott to find Nelson Nogier who sets a new career high for goals scored which gave the Moose a 3-1 lead. Nogier is the ultimate team guy. A healthy scratch more often then not to let young Jets prospect play. And you can see how much his teammates love to see him have success.

Two power play goals allowed Belleville to tie things up and despite holding a heavy shot edge it would head to extra time. Ultimately the Moose ended up outshooting the Senators 48-28 (including 20-7 in 2nd and 16-6 in 3rd).

The shootout was whatever but it did lead to one of the weirdest shootout goals I can ever recall. This turned out to be the game-winner for Belleville.

Manitoba is still a 29-17-2-2 on the season which is good enough for 2nd in the Central Division.
