32 Thoughts Podcast | Elliotte Friedman weighs in on Winnipeg Jets patience with Scott Arniel amid losing streak

Elliotte Friedman weighs in on the growing pressure surrounding Scott Arniel, Winnipeg’s patience with coaches and how long the organization can afford to wait for a turnaround.

Video Description:
On the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman said he hadn’t heard anything regarding Scott Arniel’s future as of last night.

He found Adam Lowry’s comments about players having success with the Manitoba Moose interesting, suggesting they shifted some of the focus away from the coaching staff and onto players at the AHL level. Of course, the irony is that the Jets have limited flexibility to recall players given their reluctance to place veterans on waivers.

Friedman believes Arniel understands what “could happen if this doesn’t turn around fast.” He noted that Winnipeg has historically been a patient organization when it comes to coaches, recalling Paul Maurice’s suggestion that he might have coached the Jets indefinitely had he not forced the team’s hand.

“I think everyone there sees the writing on the wall if it doesn’t change quick.”

Friedman also speculated that the Jets would prefer to exercise patience with Arniel given the chaos surrounding the Connor Hellebuyck situation, which they wouldn’t necessarily want the head coach to bear responsibility for. However, he suggested that continued struggles could force the organization into making a decision sooner than it would like.

Kyle Bukauskas wondered how the team’s struggles might impact broader organizational conversations about its direction, noting that “you don’t want to be caught in-between in perpetuity.”

Friedman concluded by emphasizing just how different the Jets look without Josh Morrissey in the lineup.
