Folks around these parts have been waiting for news about the signing of RFAs Josh Morrissey and Eric Comrie but instead they got the news that the Winnipeg Jets have extended their captain Blake Wheeler for five years and $41.25 million dollars or an AAV of $8.25 million.
Wheeler is 32 years old and has one year left on his current contract which pays him $5.6 million for the 2018-19 season. Wheeler is fresh off his most productive season of his career as he hit the 90 point plateau (91 to be precise) for the first time ever and helped lead the Jets to their best NHL season in Winnipeg history making it all the way to the Western Conference Final. As pointed out by The Point Hockey, Wheeler had a league high 34 power play assists last year and ranked 2nd in in power play slot pass completions (95).
