Winnipeg Jets Sami Niku out week-to-week with a lower-body injury

Who knew a game of soccer to warm-up for warm-up skate could prove to be so costly?  Sami Niku was scheduled to play in Washington on Tuesday night but was a late scratch as a result of sustaining a lower-body injury in the aforementioned game.

Today Jets coach Paul Maurice indicated is week-to-week and said “it’s going to be awhile”.

It has been a season to forget for Niku who began it injured after getting into a car accident during training camp and then having numerous setbacks throughout the course of the season.  In total he has played just 17 games for the Jets and 18 games for the Moose.

This is the second time this season the Jets have lost a player in a warm-up as you’ll recall Mason Appleton broke a bone in his foot playing football ahead of the Heritage Classic in Regina back in October.
