There has been quite a bit of buzz here in Winnipeg about Jets 2021 5th rounder Dmitri Rashevsky who is playing with Dynamo Moscow in the KHL season and had one season remaining on his deal.
Rashevsky was passed over twice in previous NHL drafts but the Jets got him in the 5th round in 2021. After the draft Jets Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Hillier said this about the talented forward “Every time I watched him I became more intrigued by him”.
The forward got off to a great start in Russia putting up eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 14 games which currently has him sitting 19th overall in scoring but he was as high as the top 5 around the third week of September. You can watch some of his goals here, here, here and here. He also picked up Rookie of the Week honours back on September 20th as well as of the month for September.
As he has been in focus over here in North America folks had been asking about his contract status and if he would be an option for the Jets or Moose. After the draft Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff had indicated that Rashevsky was willing to come to North America and would be willing to play for the Moose as he develops.
However that appears to be on hold as Dynamo Moscow announced that they had extended Rashevsky for one additional season (valid until April 30, 2023 according to the team).
Rashevsky did a Q&A with the team and here are some of his comments (translated via Google):
– Did you agree without hesitation when the offer to conclude a new contract was received?
– I agreed right away. I like everything here, everything suits me, so I’m just glad. It’s great that I was offered a contract.
– That is, there was no temptation to break into the NHL?
– No. It’s too early for me to go there.
You can read the full Q&A here.
Now he will still merit following for what he is doing in the KHL but the only outstanding question is the need to ascertain whether he prefers his first name to be spelled Dmitry or Dmitri.
