Winnipeg Jets, on strength of their power play, defeat top team in NHL with 4-2 victory over Vancouver Canucks

The Jets have put the losing streak behind them as they win their third straight game but this time it was against the top team in the NHL as they defeated the Canucks 4-2. With the win they improve to 33-14-5 and they leapfrog the Avs into 2nd spot in the Central with 71 points.

Notable:

The Jets scored a power play goal. I repeat the Jets scored a power play goal. In fact they had two in the 2nd period alone. On the first one Gabriel Vilardi lit the lamp with assists from Mark Scheifele and Neal Pionk. That was his first goal after going scoreless in six games.

With the secondary assist on the first Jets goal Neal Pionk moved into sole possession for 9th on the All-Time assists list for Winnipeg with 138. He had been tied with Jacob Trouba. Up next will be Mathieu Perreault with 142.

Less than four minutes later for the first time it was time to play Humble by Kendrick Lamar as Sean Monahan had his first goal for the Jets. And somehow Winnipeg has two, yes two power play goals this game.

Mark Scheifele picked up his second assist of the game which was his 30th of the season. Ninth time in his career (in 11 seasons) he’s hit 30 assists.

Some of the penalty calling in the middle frame was very, very questionable.

The Jets “lost”, although that generally conveys injury and in this instance it was illness, for Morgan Barron who didn’t play the 3rd period.

Macarena times 2 tonight in Vancouver. Gabriel Vilardi had himself a night with three points. In the process he hit his 100th NHL point (he’s at 101).

Big insurance goal by Mark Scheifele who deserved a ton of credit for the way he played. Suspect playing on HNIC on a Saturday still means a lot to 55.

You have to think Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck relished going head to head with Canucks netminder Thatcher Demko. Chalk up a win for 37 who was excellent.

Multipoint Game:

Mark Scheifele 1G 3A
Gabriel Vilardi 2G 1A
Kyle Connor 2A
