Note:  Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 from noon to 3 pm cst today as the guys discuss all the latest news from around the NHL with a special focus on the moves made by your Winnipeg Jets.   Guests:  Jim Nill (Dallas Stars GM), Michael Traikos (National Post).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press:  Chevy says team better today due to tradesThere can be no question that these two trades (Frolik and Setoguchi) have immediately improved the Jets on the wingAs Gary says in his article Setoguchi is a shooter, which will be interesting to see how he mixes with Evander Kane as presumably he would line up on the right side of the 2nd line.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets keep their headsWhile fans want to see their teams name flashing across the screen or trending on twitter, perhaps the best move are the ones that you don’t make.  When you see some of the money and term thrown at UFAs, it makes you realize that the Jets GM likely did this franchise a service by not selling the farm to bring in a playerThe fact is that the Jets team is not yet one competing for Lord Stanley’s mug so they continue to add pieces when they can as the prospect pool deepens and develops.

Winnipeg Sun:  Cheveldayoff’s attention now on signing Jets’ own RFAsWhile making a splash on the UFA market might look good on Sportscenter, the most important task for the Jets GM is getting the Big 3 RFAs signed as soon as possibleWinnipeg will be able to breathe a collective sigh of relief knowing that the team’s future has been locked up.

Illegal Curve:  Jets trade 2014 2nd Round pick for Devin Setoguchi of the WildWhile it appeared to fans and media that the Jets weren’t going to make any news on the first day of free agency, late in the day news spread that they had swung a deal with the Minnesota Wild.

Illegal Curve:  What Does A Number Four Defenceman in the NHL MakeAfter the Jets signed Grant Clitsome to his contract this week, Richard took a look at the average salaries for NHL defencemen based upon ice time.

NHL news:

Ottawa Sun:  Ottawa Senators acquire Anaheim Ducks winger Bobby Ryan.  Right after the city was in the low that one feels when the face of the franchise leaves for a now division rival, fans were elated to hear that they were getting the Ducks sniper.  Ryan himself was clearly quite pleased tweeting out;

Ottawa Citizen:  Daniel Alfredsson’s “selfish” decision leaves “devastating” feelingWhile it is not difficult to understand his desire to win the Cup before he finishes his career, I was somewhat surprised that he chose the Wings as his best path to accomplish his goal.

Columbus Dispatch:  Horton – “This Feels Like Home”Considering he signed for seven years, he had best get used to it being home.  While this felt like a big overpay, it will be interesting to see how this deal turns out for Columbus down the line.

NHL.com:  Official 2013 free agent signings trackerThere were a bunch of moves made in a day that the sports broadcasters must have loved.
