Note: As September rolls around and all this week we wanted to bring to your attention the Pass it Forward program which provides help to youth in Winnipeg who wish to play hockey but require aid in getting the necessary equipment. The program is in it’s 4th year, they have a brand new website, an active twitter feed @PassItForwardca, and they are giving away a team-signed picture of last season’s opening faceoff. Be sure to check it out.
Note II: On behalf of Illegal Curve, to those celebrating the Jewish New Year (which began last night), L’Shana Tovah ve Metukah. Happy New Year!
Jets news:
Winnipeg Sun: No plans for True North layoffs. Good news for the people who will truly suffer if their is a long lockout.
Winnipeg Free Press: Kane locked up, quickly locked out. The Jets were able to lock up another piece of the puzzle long term. They now can take some time off before the focus needs to switch to getting something done with the next round of RFAs which includes Zach Bogosian, Alexander Burmistrov, Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler.
Winnipeg Sun: Which Jets players lose the most money? Put this in the category of why fans cannot empathize with players. These players make more in one game than people, no matter how successful in their careers, would be able to duplicate in a “normal” working environment.
Winnipeg Sun: Pavelec, Ponikarovsky sign deals to play in Europe. Didn’t take long for some players to start the exodus from Winnipeg.
Illegal Curve: Message from True North regarding work stoppage. The Jets outline plans for season ticket holders as a result of the lockout.
CBA news:
Globe and Mail: The most unnecessary lockout of them all. As Shoalts points out the serious deadlines are still four weeks away. Be prepared for more posturing from both sides. Oh joy!
Globe and Mail: No hockey a windfall for networks. Who would have thunk that!!
Buffalo News: As lockout starts, it’s no business as usual. Don’t look now Jets fans but the Sabres are giving their fans 4% interest on their season tickets.
The Province: NHL lockout causing richer teams to lose millions. You have to suspect that the NHL teams that are happy about not playing are the ones who are actually losing barrels of money.
ESPN: Day 1 of lockout comes, goes. In the opening salvo, some players have already headed off to seek employment in the KHL.
TSN: Frustrated NHL fans aren’t ready to give up hope on season. Fans across the NHL have the right to be aggravated that they are possibly losing NHL games and this is especially the case for fans in Winnipeg who just got back hockey after a 15 year absence.
Washington Post: NHLPA, NHL release messages to fans. Both sides would be better served talking to each other, rather than trying to win fans support. It is so transparent.
Globe and Mail: Rinks fall silent as players prepare for labour dispute. The players have to change their routines, which for superstitious hockey players, might not be the easiest thing to do.
NHL news:
Globe and Mail: How the dour Russians learned to embrace flash and dash. Whenever you get a chance to read Roy’s column you’d be well advised to do it. In his latest, he takes you from 72′ to the present in the development of the Russian players.
