Note: The Jets had a very busy day 13 of training camp with illness continuing to go through the room, injury to Nikolaj Ehlers lingering and likely to keep him out of the last exhibition game and seeing one of their draft picks snatched off waivers by the Penguins. And that all happened before 1 PM CDT. They then took off for Calgary where they had both positive (Ford, Heinola, Gustafsson) and negative (loose team defence) in a 5-4 regulation loss to drop their pre-season record to 2-2-1. They are off today. We’ve got the full recap from the day that was here.

Note II: After a busy first day of training camp the Moose will hit the ice at 10 AM and 11:30 AM for day 2 of camp. It will be interesting to see if the Jets send down any players or keep them up with them. Check out their training camp schedule here and roster here.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Tough to get handle on wounded Jets. Hard to know how many guys were impacted last night due to the illness that’s going through the room and if that’s sapping the strength of the team overall. It seems highly unlikely this Jets club will get a full strength game in before the regular season gets underway. Scott gives you his thoughts on the game

Winnipeg Sun: ‘It’s real now’: Jets hopeful Parker Ford overcoming size, doubts. Fortunate timing for this article by Paul which was written BEFORE the Jets leading points producer in the pre-season picked up two more assists in last night’s contest with the Flames.

Winnipeg Free Press: Good, bad and ugly on display in Jets loss to Flames in preseason game. (Paywall). That is an apt way to describe last night’s contest as Mike gives you his thoughts on the loss by Winnipeg to Calgary.

Winnipeg Free Press: Rugged winger in battle for job as Jets 13th forward. (Paywall). Based on what we’ve seen at camp I suspect he will be sent down to the Moose as David Gustafsson looks like he’s secured that role at minimum and one could argue Parker Ford has also done quite a bit to stay up (but he’ll likely be a victim of his waiver exempt status). Given how young the Moose are however it would be good to have someone like Viel around to ensure opponents don’t take too many liberties with the young guns. And it isn’t just about punching faces because he’s shown he can score in the AHL as well (he had 15 goals in 60 games for San Jose’s AHL club).

Winnipeg Free Press: Illness sweeping through Jets locker room. (Paywall). Not ideal really ever to have something like this going through your room although it is giving guys like Parker Ford a longer look than they normally would have received.

Calgary Sun: Matthew Coronato shines again in pre-season as Flames rally past Jets. Check out this assessment of the game from the perspective of a writer that covers the Jets opponent.

Sportsnet: Ranking each Canadian team’s forward corps ahead of the 2023-24 NHL season. They do not rank the Jets very highly putting them in the six spot amongst the rest of the teams in Canada.
