Jets news:
Winnipeg Free Press: Bogo going under knife. On one hand you don’t want to see a lockout, but the absence of a defenceman like Bogosian even for a few months could put the Jets behind the ball significantly. For the full Jets press release, click here.
Winnipeg Sun: Jokinen talks lockout. You like to hear as a Manitoban that Jokinen already feels at home in our province. At the same time, you won’t like hearing the hard line stance it appears he is taking regarding the negotiations.
CBC: Winnipeg Jets season opener airing on CBC. As has been the theme around here lately, this only happens if we have labour peace by mid September, which looks less and less likely as the days go by. The television broadcasters, True North and fans themselves all would like to see the MTS Centre looking like this instead of the alternative for the home opener.
Puck Daddy: Atlanta Thrashers and Winnipeg Jets (1.0) Edition. Our own Drew Mindell (@icdrew) was asked to contribute to Puck Daddy’s “The Essentials for their franchises”, which covers everything from the defining player and trade, to the indispensable fan traditions.
CBA news:
Philadelphia Daily News: How labor changes hurt Flyers. We start to see how top tier (and earning) team won’t like having to concede to changes that will individually impact them negatively.
MLive.com: Red Wings players not impressed with NHL‘s latest labor proposal. Tell us how you really feel Dan Cleary. Not a surprising move by the players. They are clearly concerned that fans will adopt the NHL line that this offer was “meaningful” and popular sentiment (which isn’t with the players anyways) will further turn on them.
Toronto Sun: NHL, NHLPA to meet Friday. Here’s an idea; Meet for 45 minutes and then decide to re-convene after the long weekend. That will go over really well with fans.
CBC: NHL proposals to change revenue formula would be significant. Elliotte Friedman injects the idea that the true date to watch is October 11th, not September 15th. As per usual an interesting read.
NHL news:
Detroit Free Press: Red Wings ranked the 3rd-smartest spender in pro sports. Out of the 122 sports teams it is not a surprise that the Wings continue to rank as high as they do. GM Ken Holland and company have been doing things the right way for two decades now.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Crosby ready to play, even if NHL isn’t. Great news for the league that the Pens superstar is feeling great and is eager to play.
Edmonton Journal: Oilers lock up key young performers. Does anyone get a sense of 1980s déjà vu? Young, talented Oilers team just getting ready to fly as the Jets head over to the Western Conference in 2013-14.
