Note: Yesterday wasn’t the day but maybe today might be the day the next play by play voice of the Jets is announced? Last Thursday Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette indicated English play by play voice of the Habs on TSN 690 Dan Robertson is leaving for a TV gig but couldn’t say to which team. If it is Dan here are some of his greatest hits.
Note II: The Jets rookies concluded the Young Stars Tourny in B.C. yesterday afternoon with a 5-3 win over the Flames rookies. Goals from first rounders Brad Lambert (see here), Chaz Lucius (see here) and Cole Perfetti (see here) along with a 44 save performance from goalie Domenic DiVincentiis were the difference. They will return to Winnipeg for training camp which gets underway on Thursday.
Note III: Speaking of training camp, rosters and schedules are scheduled to come out today.
Note IV: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff had a chat with the Athletic (linked below) which delves into a number of topics about the local NHL club but I thought the most interesting tidbits was his defining the roles of the associate and assistant coaches.
Jets news:
Sportsnet: Jets training camp preview: Who will survive the battle on the back end? The glut on the back end is the biggest question mark heading into the 2022-23 season for Winnipeg. Will waiver exemption hurt prospects ready to play in the NHL?
Winnipeg Sun: Trio of Jets’ first-rounders shine as prospect tourney comes to a close. It wasn’t the easiest tournament to follow but Scott did his best and gives you his thoughts after three games for the Winnipeg rookies.
The Hockey News: Brad Lambert’s speed and skill are well-suited for the NHL. And this was before he scored in today’s Young Stars game but it is clear his offensive skills are high end.
The Athletic: Q&A with Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. (Paywall). Lots discussed in this chat which took place at the rookie tournament in B.C. including the tournament itself, format, Cole Perfetti, young prospect group, coaching roles, Barry Trotz, uncertainty with guys (Scheifele, Dubois, Wheeler), changing leadership group and surplus defenders.
The Athletic Winnipeg: Jets fantasy projections: Over or under The Athletic’s model? (Paywall). Murat goes through the entire Jets team based on the modeling by his colleague Dom Luszczyszyn and gives his thoughts on the projections.
Global News: Scheifele podcast comments add to eventful lead-up to season for the Jets. Kelly gives some of his thoughts/reaction to the chat Mark Scheifele had with Friedman and Marek on their 32 Thoughts podcast.
theScore: Central Division offseason grades. Let’s just say that they handed Winnipeg a grade that starts off my name.
Jets video:
TSN: Stripping Wheeler of captaincy is an indictment on Jets’ leadership group. The Jets started the season with some noise by stripping Blake Wheeler of his captaincy. That’s Hockey discusses the message Rick Bowness is sending to his new club, and some players that need to step up.
The Hockey News: Can the Winnipeg Jets return to the playoffs and make some noise again? Ryan Kennedy and Steven Ellis take a look as to whether the Jets can return to the playoffs and whether they are capable of making some noise in the 2022-23 season.
Jets audio:
Daily Faceoff: Chat with Jets head coach Rick Bowness. Lots covered in this 25 minute (or so) discussion with the bench boss of Winnipeg. Interestingly he did confirm that Blake Wheeler will not wear an ‘A’ this season. Not that it is a big surprise.
