National Post:  Leafs trade Jonas Gustavsson to JetsWhat does this mean for Chris Mason?  How can the Jets not re-sign Mason based solely on his new pads.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Trouba like a ‘shark on ice’He’s been crushing opponents since he was 11 years old and in a few years could help to make up one of the best defensive tandems in the NHL.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Trouba will give Jets some mean and massHe is the type of player that you count yourself lucky he is on your team and not the opposition.   But similar to the Jets selection of Mark Scheifele last year, he will be a long term project, not a piece that can be plugged into the lineup next season.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Mason wants back inOne of the best guys in the locker room, the Jets should get their UFA veteran netminder signed immediatelyHis hesitation was playing a minimal role and you would think that the Jets might let him handle a bit more action than he saw last season.  Wonder if he will still want to be the Hurricanes specialist now that  Jordan has joined Eric Staal on the team.

NHL.com:  Trouba chosen 9th overall by the JetsThe first round draft pick of the Jets gives us his first blog post as a member of the Winnipeg Jets talking about his feelings on being drafted by the newest NHL team.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets select D Jacob TroubaThe choice that made fans collectively go who?  Many expected the Jets to go with a forward with Forsberg, Grigorenko and Faksa all available for the Jets.  Instead they bolstered their defensive corps with this solid pick from Michigan.

Winnipeg Sun:  Trouba heading to collegeThis pick won’t be wearing a Jets jersey next season and perhaps not the season after that either.  This was a pick for the future, which is never something fans want to hear.

Winnipeg Sun:  Playing the TroubaOur own Kyle Kosior, who is representing IC at the draft, is a big fan of Trouba.

2012 NHL Entry Draft:

Globe and Mail:  Oilers take Yakupov with first pick, rest of night filled with surprisesAfter the Oilers and Habs made forwards the top 2 of 3 picks on day 1, the next part of the draft could be called the age of the defenceman, as the next 7 selections were of D-men.

National Post:  A look back at the first round, pick by pickQuite the night last night and we get to start it all over again today.  What was the biggest surprise of Day 1?

Winnipeg Free Press:  Best and bustsGary takes a look at the 5 best and worst 1st overall selections.  If we made this Jets (1.0 or 2.0) specific who would be your best and worst?

2012 NHL Entry Draft Trade news:

CBC:  Staal trade overshadows draft picksThe Thunder Bay native was all set to enjoy his wedding day, only to find out that he was being shipped off to Carolina.  Good news for Jordan is he will no longer be overshadowed by Crosby and Malkin, but will instead have an opportunity to be one of the go to guys in Carolina.

Newsday:  Islanders acquire defenceman Visnovsky and top pickThe Isles blueline got some veteran and rookie upgrading last night.

Dallas Morning News:  Stars trade Mike Ribeiro for Washington forward Eakin and Caps’ 2nd-round draft pickThe Stars give themselves some serious cap room when they acquired Winnipeg native Cody Eakin.

Philadelphia Daily News:  Bobrovsky trade is win-winNot sure what I’m going to do with my ‘What about Bob’ Flyers t-shirt.  The Flyers faithful are happy that they got as many picks for this enigmatic tender and the Jackets are happy to have Bobrovsky in a tandem with Steve Mason.

General NHL news:

Globe and Mail:  Don’t count on there being an NHL season next yearNot to be a Debbie Downer, but in the ‘not good for business category’ comes this feel good story.

Ottawa Citizen:  NHLPA almost ready to talkNo reason the two sides cannot get together and work this out.  Again, hard working fans putting in thousands of dollars for season tickets are not going to be sympathetic to millionaire players and billionaire owners costing them part of the 2012-13 season.
