Jets news:
Note: According to Scott Brown, Senior Director, Corporate Communications for True North, the Winnipeg Jets have hired Perry Pearn as an Assistant Coach. You might remember Pearn as he was an assistant coach with the original Winnipeg Jets back in 1995-96. Brown also announced that Assistant Coaches Charlie Huddy, Pascal Vincent, Wade Flaherty and Tony Borgford have all agreed to contract extensions.
Note II: A number of NHL teams announced their pre-season schedules already, although the Jets were not one of those teams. We do know they won’t be playing against the Red Wings, Black Hawks, Blue Jackets, Capitals, Penguins and Hurricanes.
Winnipeg Free Press: Shopping for men in middle. Probably the biggest need for the Jets right now. While they would like to address this with a draft pick, when the Jets pick 9th, the expected ‘best players available’ will all be defencemen. Will be interesting to see what Kevin Cheveldayoff and company do.
Winnipeg Free Press: Slater elects to stay a Jet. A solid, hard nosed centre who finished with a 54.4% faceoff win percentage, best on the team of forwards who took a significant number of draws. Well respected by the community and his team mates, this was a solid signing by the Jets. Here is Jim answering a question from the host of the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 Drew Mindell about his excitement about playing with his GST line mates.
Winnipeg Sun: Deal with Jets 80% done says Glass. The final piece of the GST pie. Ezra and I are eagerly awaiting this signing. For those wondering about the origin of the GST nick name here is some background.
Stanley Cup news:
Globe and Mail: Stanley Cup television ratings down on both sides of the border.
L.A. Times: Los Angeles Kings, Stanley Cup champions? Say it, and believe it.
L.A. Times: Kings broadcaster Bob Miller savors taste of victory.
L.A. Times: Pomp and circumstances of Kings’ title is unmatched in L.A. history.
Los Angeles Times: Anze Kopitar was at center of Kings’ success.
Star-Ledger: What is Devils’ Zach Parise thinking as he cleans out locker?
Star-Ledger: Devils will keep this year’s first-round draft pick.
General NHL news:
Arizona Republic: Goldwater Institute sues Glendale over Phoenix Coyotes deal. You would think that at this point the Council of Glendale would have the procedure of approving a new owner of the Coyotes down to a science. According to the Goldwater Institute they might not.
Montreal Gazette: Habs far from imitating Kings. Memo to Jets fans who are dreaming that slipping into 8th place similar to the Kings could turn into Stanley Cup aspirations next year. Looks like Habs and Jets fans will have to be patient for the next couple of seasons.
Detroit Free Press: Red Wings could target Zach Parise. How would Parise look wearing a Winged Wheel?
Detroit Free Press: Michigan Legislature approves alcohol sales at NHL Winter Classic. 110,000 people buying alcohol during the party. Cha-ching.
Edmonton Journal: Could Cooper bring his winning ways to the Oilers? Quite the path the bright young coaching star has taken. Will it take the B.C. native to Edmonton? Good question.
