Note: In addition to our regular Illegal Curve Hockey Show on Saturdays we will have three extra shows this month including one with a focus on the Seattle Expansion Draft on Wednesday July 21st, the 1st round of the NHL Draft on Friday July 23rd as well as a Free Agency Round Up show on Wednesday July 28th.
Note II: A roster freeze went into effect yesterday and now the only team allowed to make a move ahead of the expansion draft is Seattle. Just before the clock struck 2 PM there was a rumour via Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun that the Jets were trying to move Mason Appleton (you can read more in his ‘Off the Glass’ section at the bottom of his Snapshots column in his paper here).
Note III: The NHL is expected to release every team’s protected list this morning. For Winnipeg it is expected that Mason Appleton and Dylan DeMelo will be left exposed. Update: Check out the full list of protected and unprotected players for the Jets here.
Jets news:
The Athletic Winnipeg: What Winnipeg’s quiet roster-freeze day means for the Seattle expansion draft. (Paywall). Might this be a classic case of misdirection that has everyone focused on a DeMelo vs Stanley debate while the focus is entirely somewhere else?
NHL news:
There was a flurry of moves made ahead of the roster free on Saturday including a big one by a central division rival of Winnipeg as well as a few involving Manitobans or a player who used to be a Jet including:
1) Preds made waves trading right shot defenceman Ryan Elis to the Flyers for Philippe Myers and Winnipegger Nolan Patrick.
The Tennessean: ‘Time for a change to our core’: Nashville Predators deal Ryan Ellis to Philadelphia Flyers.
Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers acquire Ryan Ellis, trade Nolan Patrick and Phil Myers to Predators.
2) Predators and Golden Knights flipped a pair of Winnipeggers with Nashville getting Cody Glass and Vegas getting Nolan Patrick.
Las Vegas Review Journal: Belief in Cody Glass not strong enough to avoid trade.
Las Vegas Sun: Golden Knights trade Cody Glass to Predators, acquire Nolan Patrick.
3) Islanders traded former Jets captain Andrew Ladd to the Coyotes along with three draft picks for future considerations.
New York Post: Islanders trade Andrew Ladd, re-sign Andy Greene as they potentially eye big move.
Arizona Republic: New Coyotes forward Andrew Ladd, on Shane Doan talking to him about Arizona.
Here is the full list of trades that were made on Saturday via CapFriendly.
