Note: The 1st round of the 2019 Draft starts on Friday, June 21st in Vancouver and then Rounds 2-7 will continue on Saturday. We will be bringing you wall to wall coverage of the draft here on the website as well as on The Illegal Curve Hockey Show which will start at Noon CT on TSN 1290 Winnipeg and will continue until the end of the draft.
Note II: Today’s news was going to be all about Jacob Trouba trade speculation but that speculation was removed late last night when the team announced they had traded their 2012 1st round pick (9th overall) to the New York Rangers. The newest member of the Jets Neal Pionk spoke to the media on a conference call at 1:30 pm and you can listen to that here.
Note III: Earlier on Monday the Jets released their Development Camp schedule. The roster will be released after the draft and once the team knows which players they have drafted in Vancouver.
Jets news:
Sportsnet: Analyzing both sides of the Rangers-Jets Jacob Trouba trade. Doesn’t look great for the Jets at the moment but it will be interesting to see what the 20th overall pick turns into and if Pionk can get his groove back this season within the Jets fold.
TSN: Jets exploring Ehlers trade options. This is one of those head scratchers. While I do understand the need to add a top D man moving out a player like Ehlers seems to be a mistake. Mathieu Perreault is also on the board.
Winnipeg Sun: It was a personal decision for Trouba, Jets weren’t the issue for departing defenceman. While many are vilifying the former Jets D man Ken spoke with him and he got some insight into why the Michigan born Trouba would want to be in an American market.
Winnipeg Free Press: Sending Trouba to Rangers ‘what we wanted to do’. (Paywall). The trade isn’t what has fans up in arms right now. It was the return (or lack thereof) in their mind.
Winnipeg Free Press: Brace yourselves, Jets fans; a change is gonna come. (Paywall). It is certainly making for an interesting time in ‘Peg city.
NBC Sports: Jets were never going to get enough for Trouba. Scott gives his thoughts on the trade and looks ahead to what is to come for this franchise.
NY Post: Rangers trade for Jets’ Jacob Trouba in blockbuster. Read about the trade from someone who covers the Rangers.
The Athletic Winnipeg: Analyzing the return for Winnipeg in the Jacob Trouba trade reveals a clear loss for the Jets. (Paywall). Murat gives his insight into the deal heard around the hockey world last night.
The Athletic: Rangers get the edge in landing Jacob Trouba from Jets. (Paywall). Craig Custance checks in with executives and coaches for reaction to the Jacob Trouba trade between the Jets and Rangers.
The Athletic: Jacob Trouba is no superstar, but Rangers take first step in fixing their defense by trading for him. (Paywall). Rangers GM Jeff Gorton ticked off a lot of boxes when he obtained the rights to Trouba for the No. 20 pick in the draft and Neal Pionk.
ESPN: Rangers hit a home run in Jacob Trouba deal with Jets. (Paywall). The view of things for the folks in Gotham is quite positive.
Global News: Jets legend on trades – Winnipeg fans shouldn’t take it personally. I think what fans in Winnipeg took personally with Keith Tkachuk was the offer sheet he signed with the Blackhawks which the Jets matched. Sometimes fans don’t know the reason why a player may choose to go elsewhere and the narrative becomes “they don’t want to be here” which isn’t necessarily the case.
Jets video:
TSN: Button on Trouba deal: ‘I think it’s a necessary trade for the Jets’. Did the Jets get enough in return for Jacob Trouba in their trade with the Rangers? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button shares his thoughts and explains why he believes it was a necessary deal for Winnipeg.
Jets audio:
In the 39th episode of Ground Control, JetsTV’s Jamie Thomas and Mitchell Clinton get Winnipeg’s NHL Draft coverage underway as they discuss some NHL news and notes. Winnipeg Jets’ scout Max Giese joins the podcast as the first of a four-part series with different scouts on Winnipeg’s staff.
