Note: On Tuesday the Jets season officially concluded with 13 players speaking as well as coach Paul Maurice and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
Note II: Tune in to NHL This Week with Illegal Curve Hockey tonight on TSN 1290 Winnipeg for two hours of hockey talk starting at 6 pm as the guys recap the Western Conference Final between the Jets and Golden Knights and discuss tonight’s game 7 between the Capitals and Lightning.
Jets news:
Winnipeg Sun: Jets Notebook. Paul’s list covers 1) Scratch stings Copp. 2) Hellebuyck says he’s never been better. 3) Laine won’t ever forget it. 4) Mason would like to. 5) About that beard, Patrik.
Winnipeg Sun: The new normal for Jets. High expectations for the Jets now and in the future.
Winnipeg Sun: Goose egg sucked for Ehlers. Jets captain Blake Wheeler spoke about trial by fire and some of the young players like a Nikolaj Ehlers likely learned quite a bit during this deep playoff run which can be used in the future.
Winnipeg Sun: Veteran Jets D-man Enstrom may have played his last game. He seemed to be a bit of a lightning rod these past couple of seasons. Of course his selfless decision to allow himself to be exposed bailed out the organization during the Expansion Draft.
Winnipeg Sun: Stastny leaves door open: Jets will try to keep veteran centre around. It certainly won’t be easy considering all the signings that still need to happen this summer.
Winnipeg Free Press: Jets enter off-season with heightened expectations. (Paywall). Just making the playoffs won’t be where the bar is set anymore as this team now will live with higher expectations.
Winnipeg Free Press: Jets black and blue, but nothing broken, Maurice says. (Paywall). Colour me surprised that there weren’t more players indicating that they were dealing with any significant issues after the playoffs.
Winnipeg Free Press: Toby Enstrom likely done in Winnipeg. (Paywall). While Enstrom is not known for being particularly talkative with the media, when the Jets communications staff said the Dman was “long gone” when requested during media availability it seemed to feel like the end of the road for the player who has given so much to this organization.
Winnipeg Free Press: ‘The quicker the better,’ Trouba says about signing new deal with Jets. (Paywall). Trouba laughed when he was asked about the previous negotiations (which saw it drag into the regular season) and it was clear he would like to avoid that. Would have to think if there is a deal to be had then this might be the first deal that gets done.
NHLcom: Jets want to bring back Stastny, get Hellebuyck signed long term. Quite the laundry list for the Jets GM to get done this summer.
Sportsnet: No guarantees for Jets’ future as Cheveldayoff’s busy off-season begins. It will be a tall task to get this team refocused on the task at hand next season but that is why they get paid the big bucks.
TSN: The gut-wrenching reality of playoff goaltending. Sometimes the difference can be so small but enough to create an imbalance that gives one team the advantage as we saw in the Conference Final.
CBC: Jets bullish about next season but looking forward to rest and regroup. While I’m sure they will appreciate the rest there was no doubt this was an unhappy group about being finished with the 2017-18 season.
Globe and Mail: The Jets are out, but Winnipeg is definitely ‘in’. The run the Jets went on has certainly captured the attention of folks from coast to coast.
Jets video:
TSN: How should the Jets handle RFAs Trouba and Hellebuyck? The Jets have a number of restricted free agents this offseason, with the biggest being Jacob Trouba and Connor Hellebyuck. That’s Hockey discusses what Winnipeg should do with its two biggest RFAs.
Sportsnet: Jets believe they are building something special. Tim and Sid talk about the Winnipeg Jets being eliminated from the NHL Playoffs and what the team needs to do this summer.
Jets audio:
TSN 1290 Winnipeg: It still stings but important steps were taken. Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff joined Andrew Paterson and Rick Ralph in studio. They discussed the Jets playoff run, his experience being part of the Winnipeg community, why the players love to play in Winnipeg, what the expectations were for Paul Stastny before the trade deadline, what the difference was in the series vs. Vegas, the types of analytics the team uses. They also discussed how Blake Wheeler has grown as a leader, Paul Stastny’s future in Winnipeg, Wheeler’s career year, Hellebuycks’ breakout season, the Jets salary cap situation for next year and prospect Kristian Vesalainen.
TSN 1290 Winnipeg: It was a terrific run. Winnipeg Jets play-by-play voice Dennis Beyak joined Andrew Paterson and Rick Ralph on the Afternoon Ride. They discuss the Jets season, the loss to Vegas in the Conference Finals, and what’s next for the Winnipeg Jets.
TSN 1290 Winnipeg: Jets have another year before cap situation gets interesting. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joined Andrew Paterson and Rick Ralph on the Afternoon Ride. They discussed Vegas’ series win over the Winnipeg Jets, if the Jets were out of energy after the series vs. Nashville, what this season means for the Winnipeg Jets and what the future holds for the team.
TSN 1290 Winnipeg: Jets were left chasing the Golden Knights. Yahoo Sports NHL editor Justin Cuthbert joined host Kevin Olszewski to talk about the Winnipeg Jets series loss to Vegas and other stories from around the NHL.
Illegal Curve: GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and Coach Paul Maurice End of Season scrums. Their combined presser ran just a shade over 32 minutes covering 16 questions/topics.
Illegal Curve: End of Season player scrums. As you would expect the talk ranged from recapping the past season, to looking ahead to next year to contracts and everything in-between. Thirteen players in total spoke on Tuesday including Wheeler, Scheifele, Stastny, Myers, Mason, Little, Lowry, Trouba, Morrrissey, Ehlers, Laine, Copp & Hellebuyck.
