Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Note:  The Jets don’t have anything scheduled for today although I suspect even if they had a practice scheduled it would probably be cancelled.  Of course I’ve been wrong before so if they do end up practicing stay tuned for a Jets Practice Report.  Otherwise with their 3-1 win from last night in their back pocket we will likely not see them until Monday when they take to the ice for morning skate in Ottawa.  One piece of good news for the Jets is their win combined with the Wild loss clinched them home ice advantage in the 1st round.

Note II:  The Moose completed a tough stretch in their schedule last night with a 5-4 loss to the Marlies and which basically saw them doing quite a bit of travel and basically playing a game every second day.  The team is off today and will have a week to recover and reset as they prepare to face Bakersfield here in Winnipeg next weekend as they finish their eight-game homestand.

Jets news:

Toronto Star:  Leafs’ loss to Jets reveals state of national affairs.  Does the loss rise to the level of national crisis?

Toronto Sun:  Scheifele sees similarities as Jets, Leafs move into contending status.  No doubt that both teams have very promising futures.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets put stinker behind them, clinch home ice in first round with win over Maple Leafs.  It was important for the Jets to be able to get the stink of the Thursday game off their clothes and have a strong performance.  Ken recaps the game.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets bounce back against Leafs.  (Paywall).  Big win for a team that wants to have some good feelings on the road.  Jason provides his insight from within the ACC.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets’ Trouba recalls aftermath of concussion.  (Paywall).  A scary situation when he was on the receiving end of that Benn hit.  

Winnipeg Free Press:  Hellebuyck, not Wheels, Jets’ true MVP.  (Paywall).  Making the case that it is the Jets netminder not the captain most deserving of this recognition.  My suspicion is neither player will lose sleep over it.  Of course this article was written before Hellebuyck won his 41st game of the season and became the third highest U.S. born goalie for wins in a season.

Sportsnet:  Jets tighten grip on 2nd place in Central, handle Maple Leafs.  The Jets scored three straight goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday. With the win, Winnipeg move closer to securing second place in the Central Division.

Sportsnet:  Laine & Matthews contracts could be challenging.  The panel looks at the upcoming contract negotiations for Patrik Laine and Auston Matthews, and the Sedin twins potentially retiring and what their timeline is.

TSN:  Confident Laine blossoming into elite level scorer.  Just two seasons into his NHL career, Patrik Laine is already separating himself among the league’s most elite scorers and even though it’s no secret that his favourite spot is at the top of the circle, it hasn’t helped his opponents slow him down. Kristen Shilton has more.

Moose news:

Illegal Curve: Moose slide hits five games as they lose 5-4 to Marlies.  The game may have been lost in translation with the focus on the Jets game that began soon after the Moose game ended.  Plenty to digest from another tough loss by Manitoba.
