Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Note:  The Jets are back on the ice today for practice as they get ready to face off against the St. Louis Blues tomorrow afternoon at the MTS Centre.

Note II:  The Moose will face the Rampage tonight with puck drop at 7:30 pm.  Manitoba will look to avoid starting a new losing streak against the bottom dwelling San Antonio.

Jets news:

Sportsnet:  Winnipeg Jets mid-season report cards.  As one might expect it isn’t too rosy a picture here in Peg’ city with this assessment.

The Hockey News:  Promising Jets going nowhere until they shore up their goaltending.  I don’t agree with the idea that the Jets haven’t drafted well when it comes to goalies.  Hellebuyck,  Comrie and Phillips are all nice options between the pipes and all were drafted by Winnipeg.  You could argue that Hellebuyck was rushed but he is still long term likely to be a solid goalie for the Jets.  In fact, InGoal Magazine which evaluates goalies, had Hellebuyck and Comrie in their top five of goalie prospects.

Winnipeg Sun:  Paul’s Notebook. This article includes: 1) Maurice doesn’t have it easy. 2) Copp’s promotion. 3) Ondrej so-so. 4) Finding humour in first goal against Pavelec.

Winnipeg Free Press:  History lesson from 1979 Jets shows how a coach ‘loses a room’.  (Paywall).  As a former NHLer Scott speaks from the experience of someone who has been in this type of environment.

Illegal Curve:  Can Nikolaj Ehlers give the Winnipeg Jets more?  This isn’t about what the dynamic Dane can do when he has the puck but instead what he does when it isn’t on his stick.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  Pavelec return a great story for Jets.  Play-by-play man Paul Edmonds joined the Big Show after the Winnipeg Jets took down the Coyotes 6-3 to talk a much needed victory, the swap of Nikolaj Ehlers for Andrew Copp by Paul Maurice and why Ondrej Pavelec’s 30 save performance wasn’t perfect but provided positive vibes for the club.

Moose news:

Illegal Curve:  Manitoba makes three roster moves.  They added a goalie, subtracted a goalie and also re-added a forward who had previously played for them.  Will be interesting to see how Phillips handles the transition to the AHL.

Prospect news:

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets prospect Poolman not worried about future.  (Paywall).  Mike had a good chat with the Jets prospect.  The Jets cannot afford to lose out on adding defensive depth in the organization when the opportunity presents itself.
