Winnipeg Free Press:  Take ’em…or leave ’em?  Not exactly a list to get overly excited about.  Selanne is obviously the free agent 99% of Winnipeg would die to see in a Jets uniform, but all indications are its Anaheim or retirement for the Finnish Flash.  Aside from Teemu, the only really promising free agent would be Zherdev as he is only 26 and has the potential for tremendous upside.

Winnipeg Free Press:  I salute you, Jets logo.  As per usual Kives Sunday column is a must read as he hits the nail on the head when discussing the idea of the new Jets logo being overly militaristic.  As someone who had a grandfather in the Air Force I appreciate the thought behind the Jets logo and what True North is planning on doing for military families.

So at the risk of upsetting the legacy of J.S. Woodsworth and all the other great pacifists in Winnipeg’s history, I am no more troubled by the fighter plane on the Jets jersey than I am troubled by the fang-toothed dinosaur on the Toronto Raptors’ shirts.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets captain no longer a Ladd.  The Jets did themselves a big favour when they locked up their captain for 5 years.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets sign defenceman to AHL deal.  The Jets AHL affiliate got a new name, a new logo and a new player.

More on the Jets military logo controversy plus from ‘Around the NHL’ something Jets fans know all too well, a vote to build an arena with public funds on Long Island and taking a look at Bettman’s salary after the jump.

NBC Sports:  Not liking the tie between military and new Jets logo.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion but in this case I’m not too concerned about the deeper meanings or ties between the Jets and the military machine.  If True North starts ordering military Jets to do flyovers, then we may have a cause for concern.

Around the NHL:

New York Post:  Vote for Coliseum is vote to spend your cash.  I also wondered if the new arena in Brooklyn would be an option for the Islanders and it appears it would be.  Fans in Winnipeg are very familiar with this sort of “should they pay for a new arena with public money” debate.

Ottawa Citizen:  Hired gun for owners.  Bettman is ultimately doing what the owners want.  At the end of the day he has 30 (technically 29) organizations that he needs to make happy with his job performance.  And it would appear that they remain very happy with what he has been able to accomplish.
