Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

Note:  Tonight is the final home game of this four game home stand.  The Jets have secured five of six points and are hoping to take advantage of a Senators team that played 65 minutes (and lost in a shootout) last night in St. Paul.  Reminder that it is a 6:30 pm start time as the team celebrates the Second Annual Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Night.

Standings watch:   Flames won (in OT). Wild won (in SO). Kings won.  Sharks won.  Canucks lost.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press:  Stempniak surprised, but excited to join Jets.  It was interesting to hear him tell media that he had Winnipeg on his list of three teams to sign with although he ultimately chose the Eastern Conference champ Rangers.  With Tanner Glass and Keith Tkachuk giving glowing reviews of Winnipeg, Stempniak wasn’t afraid to discuss the possibility of a long term stay with the Jets.

Winnipeg Free Press:  The Hockey News proclaims Jets ‘2019 Stanley Cup champions’ in Future Watch issue.  Does anyone else remember when this was said of the Jets 1.0 in the early 90s?  Selanne, Tkachuk and Zhamnov were going to take the Jets to the promised land in the mid 90s.  This time around the excitement surrounds Scheifele, Trouba, Lowry, Ehlers and more.  I’d be curious to know how many of these Future Watch predictions are accurate?

Winnipeg Sun:  Kindness never ends for Jets fans.  As I said yesterday when I heard what young Keaton Hamin did for Alyx Delaloye his family has to be proud of the maturity and empathy that he displayed the other night.  Kudos for TJ Stroud for recognizing this and ensuring that he was rewarded for it since Keaton clearly made the gesture without any expectation of being rewarded.

Winnipeg Sun:  Lee Stempniak surprised by trade but eager to help Winnipeg Jets get to playoffs.  This is certainly not the first time the veteran NHLer made a move as the deadline day approached.  He sounded quite eager to get started with this group in his first round of interviews.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets players hope they are still here for ‘2019 Cup win’.  As of right now it is only Wheeler and Myers who are currently signed into that year so GM Cheveldayoff better ensure he has the rest of the squad signed as well.  Lots of chuckles from the room when this was discussed at the MTS Centre yesterday.

CBC:  Mitch Peacock talks with the newest Jet (video).  Following his first practice with the guys, Lee Stempniak was quickly introduced to the local media and chats with them about his trade to Winnipeg.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg:  The Big Show.  TSN’s Craig Button says he has the Jets as one of the five best teams in the NHL, while also giving them the best grade of all Canadian teams at the deadline. Button also outlines how Dustin Byfuglien’s strong play this season will effects his future as a Jet.
