Winnipeg Jets assign prospect Elias Salomonsson to Skelleftea

There has been quite a bit of excitement over Jets prospects this summer and one that has certainly garnered his fair share of chatter is 2022 2nd rounder Elias Salomonsson, a big, right-shot defenceman.

When we first spoke to him at Jets Development Camp in July his plan was to return to Skelleftea where he’d have a top role with his Swedish club.

A couple of months later he was back in Winnipeg for the Young Stars Tournament which got going in mid September. When we spoke to him he had already started his season over in Sweden having played three games and was feeling confident in his game. At that time he said:

“My goal is to make a good camp here and try to take a spot. If not, go home and come back stronger.”

He had a good showing in Penticton and then continued to look strong during the Jets training camp which got underway the following week.

Salomonsson took a hard shot in the fourth game of the pre-season against the Senators in Ottawa that knocked him from that game and then kept away from the main group, instead he was skating with the IR group on a separate rink.

The presumption was he would be assigned back to Skelleftea once he was healthy and ready to go but instead the Jets assigned him to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. This was an interesting development and it was well within Winnipeg’s rights to do so as Salomonsson had fulfilled the requirements of the NHL/SHF Transfer Agreement.

After he skated with the Moose for a few days continuing to get comfortable both with the city of Winnipeg and the organizations, the Jets have made the decision to re-assign him back to Skelleftea where the 19 year old will continue to develop while playing big minutes for his club back home.
